Martin Elliott's Complete Recording Sessions

Can anyone assist with details of how ME gathered information for his book. Was he granted access to the archives or did he just listen to very boot under the sun?

Chav, ask him. He is pretty easy to reach on the Net.

I would enjoy seeing him put out an updated version of the book.

Is it more complete than the book from Nico Z?
How updated are both books?

I would rather call the book "The incomplete recording sessions".

Not too impressed by it. I would stick to Nico's site if I were you, because it has a lot more information.

Would you care to point out some missing info?
I bought the book, both editions when they were first published, and i will buy the next one too. Excellent book, a must have in my opinion. And Martin is a nice guy too.

It's a phenomenol piece of work. I have it next to my bed and have done for years, brilliant reference book. I didn't realise Martin wrote it until I spoke with him at the Cardiff show. It must have taken years.

Yep

Having occasionally toyed with the idea of putting together a sessionography/live history of the band in book form, the amount of time Martin told me that it took him to research and put that book together when I was talking to him in Berlin was enough to instantly scare me off.

The Stones dont exactly make the day-to-day details of their recording sessions accessible for anyone putting together something like this, which is more than enough to dissuade anyone. So, until that happens, youre never going to get anything thats a 'definitive' account.

By any standards, Martin's book is superb and an essential read for anyone interested in the history of the band's recordings.

It's a good read, but he had no access to the archives. There are no reviews of songs which aren't available on bootlegs or at least in tape collector's circles.

For anyone being negative about Martins book, come up with something a quarter as good in the next 5 years and then knock it.

It's utterly essential for anyone interested in their recording history. Aside ffrom how informative it actualy is, what else I like about it is the "chatty" style it's written in. I bought a few years back and flick through it at least once a month when listening to the Stones. Often just to read up a bit on the track I'm listening too.

I can't say for sure whether Martin will do a 3rd edition of his book, but I absolutely loved the first two....and I hope a 3rd edition comes out sometime in the next few years.

I _do_ know that he saw the recent thread here at IORR about the similarities between Love's "Revelation" and the Stones' "Goin' Home" on Aftermath, and the thread absolutely piqued his curiosity in a major way, he told me he was quite stunned by it.

Well, he has Live Licks, A Bigger Bang and the newly surfaced Steel Wheels outtakes to explore. I reckon we'll get another volume in the next few years too. If ANYTHING, I think he was a little haisty on his reports on the new 40 Licks tracks. He obvsiously had'nt heard them when writing about them.

I just got the new edition of Elliotts book. A BIG upgrade from his earlier edition. It's a great book, and recommended (and it's not expensive either).
