Musical Legend Art Wood Dies
Art Wood, the blues singer and brother of Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood died on Friday after a six-month battle with cancer.
The singer formed the Artwoods in the 60's, a rhythm 'n blues band once tipped for greatness. He also formed a band called Quiet Melon with his brothers Ronnie and Ted, before Ronnie went on to join the Small Faces with Rod Stewart, followed by the Rolling Stones.
Mr. Wood's wife, Angie, paid a warm tribute to Art from her home in Teddington where the couple had lived for 16 years. The couple had been together for 21 years and had married in 1990.
"He was a very loveable person, a great singer and showman, and he loved being on stage," she said. "But he had no ego and he always let his fellow musicians shine at gigs too."
Away from the limelight, Angie said her husband was a great person to be around. "He was the funniest person I ever met, and he was so kind-hearted and gentle as well as being creative," she said.
The musician was a regular performer at the Eel Pie Club in Twickenham, where he performed more recently under the name The Art Wood All Stars,
The club's co-owner Gina Way said he was irreplaceable. "He has left a great gap in the Eel Pie which will never be filled and we are deeply saddened," she said. "He was a lovely man and a special friend of the club as well as to us personally."
Ronnie Wood has taken a break from the Rolling Stones tour, currently in America, to be with his family. The funeral will take place on December 1.
