The Wick
Posted by: RedlandsRodge ()

Hi,

I recently visited Ronnie's old house 'The Wick' in Richmond. Unfortunately I got my info slightly wrong and missed getting a pic of the cottage that Keith stayed in for several months 1973-'74. I have found out since I was looking in the wrong spot. However,I do recall seeing the actual cottage but didn't realise at the time it was the Keith place, so never took a photo.

On 'World of Keith Richards' there is a section dealing with 'Keith Locations' and I would love a pic of this cottage. I would like to ask has anybody visited 'The Wick' and photographed Keith's cottage?

Plus one more request for information. Can anybody tell me if 'The Feathers' public house in or near Fleet Street, London still exists? This is the pub where Keith & Mick went to celebrate after getting out of jail in '67

I live close to "The Wick", so if you tell me where this cottage supposedly is, I'm sure I'd be able to get a digi-shot of it & e-mail it to you ? Unfortunately I haven't got a clue what you're on about. What cottage ? Where ? In the grounds/garden of The Wick, or outside it, and if so - where ?

Hi Pauly,

That's very kind of you to offer.

It sounds as if you know 'The Wick'. If you go down the side road, I believe it may be called Nightingale Lane, head towards the Petersham Hotel. Following The Wick's' garden wall down, past a couple of large solid wooden gates. You'll then see a small housing block, at the bottom of 'The Wick' garden but outsid eof the boundary. Not sure if its one or two separate residences, but certainly in one building - that's where Keith stayed. Incidentally, Ronnie Lane also lived there at a separate time. If you could get a pic by email that would be terrific. I'd then put it on the site. There are some pics of 'The Wick' on the site at the moment under 'Keith's Homes' and also 'Keith Locations'. My email is scattered all over the website. Cheers.

I stayed across the street from The Wick when I was in London for the shows recently. The cottage is where Keith stayed when he was laying low around 1973 or so and trying to avoid the police, around the time he was getting a lot of busts and harassment when living in Cheyne Walk.

The cottage is at the bottom of the back garden which borders on Nightingale Lane as you walk down towards the Petersam Hotel. Its quite a high wall, so any views from the lane are limited.

Of course, you could always knock the front door and ask the current occupant of The Wick if you can come in and photograph his back garden. However, at the moment - like Woody - hes currently on tour in America, playing lead guitar for a little known 60's beat combo that hes a member of. I believe theyre called "The Who", or something...smiling smiley

Know it well, used to live on Richmond Hill & going past the Wick and/or up & down Nightingale Lane was part of the daily/nightly dog walk for years. OK, I'll see if I can grab a shot of it for you, no problem. But as Gazza points out in his post above, there is indeed quite a high flanking wall there on the Nightingale Lane side of the garden. I'll see if I can help you out though. If I get nicked for stalking Pete Townshend as the security camera spies my ass hangin' outa some bloody large oak tree up that way .......... I trust you'll bail me out ???

Trees & climbing? Sounds familiar.

Because of the high wall between the Wick garden and Nightingale Lane it's actually easier to see the cottage from the towpath on the other side of the river than it is from the road 20 feet away. (Mind you, you'd need a powerful telephoto lens to get a good picture of it from there).

It's really private, but judging by the places it's visible from, the cottage must have a fantastic view down the Thames - the classic view from Richmond Hill which features in so many paintings. I really envy Keith his residence there.

When I said I'd see if I could help, I meant I'd try and grab a shot with my compact digital .......... not run out & buy an 800mm telephoto lense !! Yes, I'm sure it IS visible from the other side of the river. O well !

Thanks Pauly, I didn't realise it was that hidden. I do appreciate you trying. Thanks again.

was always a good challenge, as a kid, to try and cycle
down Nightingale Lane, without using the brakes.

Christ, Adrian..I tried to walk down it a month ago with a sports holdall and that was hard enough..lol

it's seen, almost, as a badge of 'honour' and a 'coming of age'
initiation ceremony, in the area, lol

tried it 3-4 times in my youth, alas -
went over the handlebars a couple of times, close to the bottom
(i have the scars on elbows, head and knees, as proof!!)

other couple of times, bottled out and squeezed on the brakes.

Also recall sledging down there, one very snowy and cold winter...
not so brave these days.

And if you succeeded ........... you probably would've found yourself flying across the Petersham Rd and heading for a dip in the Thames at about Mach 2. That's one hell of a gradient there !! You've obviously lived to tell the tale. So how WAS it goin' down there with no brakes - apart from f***ing frightening that is ??

I HAVEN'T tried as yet because I'm not in the country at the moment, but I will do so when I get back. The cottage might or might not be visible from other points, don't know till I get home and go for a walk to it and have a look. I'll let you know.

Got this, in relation to Keith's cottage, from Ian McLagan yesterday who had initially told me how to find 'The Wick'.

'You walk along the whole length of the garden wall and there’s a gate on your left where the road turns to the right. It’s the Coach house at the bottom of the garden.

Gottit?

Cheers,

Mac'

OK, got it. Know the bend in the road he's talking about. I'm back in UK end of first week October.

The google map 'open g' let's you zoom in one more time. You can see the coachhouse (its the inverted L-shaped building, as the road bends to the right, just as Mac describes

Hi Gazza, when did Pete Townshend buy The Wick? It's only about 3 or 4 years ago, that I send Twonshend a letter to an address I found in a songbook published in the 80s and got an answer: Ranelagh Drive in Twickenham - i.e. on the other side of the river. I have some Who biographies with that house mentioned (not to be confused with his studio on Eel Pie Island - also well known to Stones fans). Did he move?

I dont know. I think I read one time that his office is in Chiswick, although I could be wrong. He was definitely living at The Wick when I stayed in Richmond for the Stones 'Licks' shows in August 2003, though.

Pete lived in the Wick when Mick redorded Godness in the doorway, you can see it on the documentary being Mick.
So he could have bought it from Ronny I think.

Possibly a stupid question, but I'm a relitivly new fan and trying to learn all I can.
When did Ronnie sell the Wick? Is it known why?

Re: The Wick

probably for the same reasons that anyone else sells a house? he got somewhere else he liked, simple as that I suppose.

Not sure when he sold it but he still has a house in nearby Kingston. He lived in the US for much of the 80's but moved to Ireland after that.

He moved to the Victorian hunting lodge on kingston Hill at least 10 years ago, he celebrated his 50th there.

BTW, he also used to live on Richmond Green, No 1 Maids of honour Row.

As far as I'm aware Ronnie sold to Townsend about '77-79. Remember he went through separating from Krissie who lived at 'The Wick' around that time. So I can imagine a new relationship with Jo brought on a decision to sell.

There are some superb pics of Ronnie in his back garden in the Daily Mail publication 'Unseen Archives'.

I'm sure Pete Townsend's Eel Pie Publishing company has an office in Richmond, somewhere close by the Green.

I had thought Ronnie still lived at Maid Of Honour Row, because the day we went to 'The Wick' we also went there. Didn't know which number, just looking out for the Woodpecker. Now I know why we didn't see him there.

Doesn't his current house now back onto Richmond Park?

You are correct, it's just off the green. A former neighbour of mine shares an office with his partner in the same building. would you like me to ask him where the precise location is ?

it's amazing the risks and fearlessness you have when you're young (and stupid)
very fast...very noisy- and pretty painful!!

No thanks Pauly not bothered about Townsend's office.

Rockman, that was one of the pics I was on about. Great house! Doesn't he look young? Mind you we were all young then. "We all grow all old"
