OT: Lou Reed's Legendary 12/21/73 Gig at the Academy of Music

This was preserved on two albums : 1974's "Rock n Roll Animal" and 1975's "Lou Reed Live". I owned both albums, and recently bought both CDs. These came from one gig, and we can now reconstruct the whole show. It was extraordinary, and Lou rose to the occasion.

This is the actual setlist, as culled from the two CDs:

1. Intro/Sweet Jane
2. How Do You Think It Feels
3. Caroline Says
4. I'm Waiting For The Man
5. Lady Day
6. Heroin
7. Vicious
8. Satellite of Love
9. Walk On the Wild Side
10. Oh Jim
11. Sad Song
12. White Light/White Heat
13. Rock n Roll

This was one of the best shows of the 70s, and with a little patience, it can now be enjoyed in its entirety.

1973 has been a popular topic lately, and I fully believe that it was a golden year for rock n roll. This year was the apogee, before the mid-70s meltdown and the advent of disco.

Remember, this was also the year of the Dolls' first album and Iggy & the Stooges' "Raw Power". The old order was being shaken up. The first glimpses of the coming punk/new wave/heavy metal revolution were there to see. The Ramones/ Sex Pistols/ Clash were just around the corner.

For pop metal, this was also the year of Montrose's first album. That band featured a very young Sammy Hagar on vocals. I loved that band. 5 years later, a hotshot guitarist named Eddie Van Halen would propel the pop metal scene into the spotlight.

The "Intro/Sweet Jane" track from Rock n Roll Animal was an FM staple for many years--probably Lou's best-known track apart from "Walk On the Wild Side."

"Intro" the Steve Hunter-Dick Wagner guitar workout appealed to a Classic/Hard Rock sensibility that was miles away from that of the the hard-core Lou/VU fan. Among that crowd it was a point of pride to dismiss RnR Animal as a commercial sell-out of the VU.

I recall hearing a hipster at a 1978 Roxy gig that premiered Street Hassle proclaim, "I like ALL of Lou's albums----EXCEPT Rock n Roll Animal!"

As for 1973, I'd call either '71 or '72 the apogee, but I will agree that a lot of great music came out that year.

It's a very good one indeed. Lou Reed is awesome. Try to get a hold of his "American Poet" live album from 2000 (I think). It's way cool. From the same tour I think. And the cover is awesome.

American Poet is great, but it's not from the same tour. It's from an ewarlier, much booted radio show with a different band.

Released over two albums - the remastered, expanded Rock N Roll Animal and Lou Reed Live. Great gig. Lou on top form, backed by a cracking band.

New Sensations and Growing Up In Public - long deleted on CD - have effectively been reissued in Japan now, in the new sleeves, so anyone who doesn't have them should grab 'em.

I've got a few of these and they're exquisite - Berlin comes with a reproduction of the original booklet.

I think 'New Sensations' is one of Lou's most underrated records. And you?

For Live Lou I prefer "Live In Italy" from 1984, with genius Robert Quine (& Lou) on guitars, cutting loose like he didn't get the chance to on their studio efforts together "Blue Mask" & "Legendary Hearts". Listen to the exhilarating "Sister Ray" or the transcendent (but not overbown) "Rock and Roll"
--then mourn Quine's sad death.
Live Velvets: "1969 Live" (ugly green cover w/ female legs) beats the 3rd studio album at its own game - hypnotic, heart-melting, beautuful, sad, intimate. Still have Patti Smith's 1974 review somewhere. Then that album's sonic opposite, closer to "White Light/White Heat", called "VU Live 68" which rocks like VU rocking out. "Move Right In", & a long "Cant Stand It" that blows the studio take issued in '85 away, highlight. To me "Max's" even upgraded is more noteable for its ambience than sound or music - and enthusiastic amateur Billy Yule just cant replace Maureen Tucker, who was as essential to the Velvets as Charlie to the Stones, Moon to the Who, etc.

Bassplayer can you rememeber - osn't the "Live" album pretty much songs 7 -11 in that sequence too? I am trying to recall where "Waiting for my Man" fit in. Did it open Side 2 of "Live"?
"Caroline" and "How do you think it feels" were only added at this late date to the expanded Animal version.
I will never forget hanging in a disco on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg on the dancefloor that was a boxing ring getting down to Live "Oh Jim" LOL

Love Rock and Roll Animal and the seemingly much-maligned at the time Live (can't really understand why since it's from the same show ) and I've always thought that Wagner/Hunter were one of the best twosomes in hard rock...I'm with you on New Sensations as well Gazza-it takes me straight back to '84 when it and R.E.M.'s Reckoning were the soundtrack to my 19-year-old summer...absolutely love My Friend George and Doin' the Things That We Want To among others.

Absolutely. It's a terrific album. Turn To Me, in particular, is wonderful. Ecstasy's probably my favourite album overall though. I went to every London show he played. Met him afterwards. Perfectly charming guy. Except when he lit up a cigarette and a fan said - all hurt - "But, I thought you'd quit!". "Are you my mother?" Lou snapped.

Now, the million dollar question for you sir, is where do you stand on Metal Machine Music? Undiluted crap (wherein, if you can find a CD player which plays shite metal backwards, crank up the volume and take methamphetamine, you're supposed to hear Lou laughing his ass off), in my opinion, but it, ur, has its champions. Apparently Lou's next album is called Meditation Music and features guitar drones with his tai chi master gabbling over it. Can't wait.

You gotta love Lou though.

That IMHO is a better live album. The Hunter/Wagner band gave too much of a hard-rock sound to the Velvets' tunes (which just doesn't fit), and despite my admiration for their guitar playing, I thought they got a little solo-wanky.

Quine was terrific with everybody (Richard Hell, Matthew Sweet, etc.) he played. Lou's 78 band was quite good also, but really only available on boot. The Take No Prisoners album is more of a Lou stand-up routine.

New Sensations is underrated. Also his Legendary Hearts disc.

karl

P.S. MMM is the greatest album of all time. It's a matter of properly preparing the brain chemistry before listening.

LOL...I met him just before the Belfast show he played in September 2000, so I assume thats around the same time as he was touring behind 'Ecstasy'. Signed my copy of 'New York' (my favourite Lou album along with 'Berlin') and was generally nice to everyone. One girl asked him to sign her passport and he recoiled in mock horror 'believe me, you dont want MY signature on your passport'...

I do, but I've never been able to listen to MMM for more than a few minutes. Believe me, I've tried.

I might add that Coney Island Baby is well worth a listen too. And The Blue Mask of course. Songs For Drella is a must too.

Indeed you can. Wonderful album. Kicks ius an extraordinary thing. Get the reissue, if you haven't got it. The bonus tracks aren't really up to much (none of the alternate versions surpass the originally releaed ones), but the remastered sound is great. An expanded Street Hassle's coming out next year.

I would like to put in my two cents for the much maligned "Sally Cant Dance",Robert Quine once said he loved that record, maybe only me and him though LOL. Coney Island Baby is also just wonderful, I must remember to pick up the new reissue with added tracks.

really? Wonderful

Think I read years ago that 'Berlin' was originally meant to be a double LP, with the songs being longer than the versions that were eventually released. Is that true?

I think I heard that too. Someone once mentioned to me that there is a bootleg of it in somewhat good quality (I'm thinking it might be the quality as on the "Loney At The Top" Stones boot). I never got around to getting Lou boots though, so I really can't tell.

Can we recognize Bruce Springsteen's part more vivid?

I'm searching desperately the Berlin outtakes, and I've found none. It's said that Bob Ezrin has lots of them, because he recorded everything in the sessions.

Come on Lou, release them!

The album was originally planned as a double, with several of the songs you know and love being a lot longer in length. So far the only "outtake" I've heard from the sessions is a 50 second piano based instrumental linking the first and second songs of the album, which came from the 8 track tape version of Berlin.

The songs were then edited down to make a single album. Lou was asked about the original versions recently and said that the unedited mixes have been lost.

I have read some really interesting stuff about the recordings of "berlin". All the stuff about how it drove Ezrin crazy etc. is great to reaD, but the technical details were almost more interesting. How they did the orchestrations, to fit in with the spiritual side of the album etc.
