What's Keith's main musical influence ?

After reading that Keith added horns to LT&A, I wondered who inspires keith the most nowadays (1989-present).
While hearing This Place Is Empty or Slipping Away or Nearness Tom Waits comes to mind, his jazzy style would also explain some changes on BTMMR, LT&A and WHY.
I don't think the Keef of 1981 would have loved horns on this tunes.
Please note that I'm a huge fan of Tom Waits, I don't want to bash him.

I had to goolge that name becasue I'd never heard of him before.

well, I dont think Keith wouldn't have liked horns, it probably just didnt occur to him back then.

Ive read that during rehersals for the 81 tour at Longview farm, keith played a lot of piano, songs like "The Nearsness of You". So I think hes always been into that kind of music. as the Stones live show evolved it then became possilbe to have some that inifluence in the conert.

As far as guitar playing goes, I'd say it's mostly BB King nowadays.

>> I don't think the Keef of 1981 would have loved horns on this tunes. <<

but ... Keith envisioned horns playing the riff on Satisfaction.
the Stones have been using horns since the mid-60s,
and even if you just mean pre-81 numbers Keith sings lead on:
try Something Happened to Me Yesterday, Happy, Coming Down Again and All About You.

edit: oh sorry - i thought you said "on his tunes" but i reckon you meant "on this tune".
and right, i reckon if Keith had wanted horns on Little T&A in 81, he would've had 'em. he's not shy about using horns.

you can hear some of that, and read some cool stories about the reheardsals, on this site: [www.studiowner.com]
that's the page with the most audio clips, but the whole site is well worth exploring.

someitmes Paint it black gets that really fancy intro. Like on the flashpoint version. Maybe that was segovia influenced.

God, I know that the Stoney music is also connected to horns and harmonies, but BTMMR, WHY and TY were definetly not written for horns.

glad it grooved you, Ryanpow - there are a few more Keith numbers on other pages of that site,
along with miles of other cool stuff.
by the way, Keith also did The Nearness of You, Over the Rainbow and a handful of other tunes
at a session with Bobby Keys in LA in march of 81 ... and that's okay, Hanns Rainsch - no harm done i hope! :E

People like Keith have many influences, and the influences change over time, but let's not forget some of the obvious ones, like Jimmy Reed.

Keith was in fact a quireboy at the coronation of Queen Elisabeth in 1954!

It seems like both keith and mick have been 'fessing up to more white artists as influences in recent years. Even elvis gets name-checked now, whereas when the band came out, they only brought up black artists when asked. Maybe this began with keith's 50s rock and roll streak with "Twenty Flight Rock" and the phaser as a substitute for slapback echo. But more than ever now, they both seem into country.
