The Stones and soccer
Posted by: micwer ()

Hey guys,
A friend of mine is writing an article on the Stones and soccer (or as we say in Europe, football). Any interesting anecdote?
When did Jagger get into it? Did he play in high school? What about the others?

Thanks, any info (and its source) would be super helpful!

Mick Jagger played basketball while at Dartford Grammer and although he's been spotted at England matches at the past, I've never read anything to suggest he's much of a fan. According to his mother, Keith was scared of footballs as a child, so not much hope there then! I think Bill likes cricket (as does Mick) but I have no idea about the others.

Oh, I know Mick played basketbal because there has a been a team photo published in one of his biographies. However, I found out through one of my fathers former work freinds who was in the year below Mick at school. He gave me a print of a team photo also which I BELEIVE has never been published before. At least, I have'nt seen it anywhere!

Nice, thanks.
I know that Mick was wearing a jersey of the italian soccer team, the Squaddra Azzura, in 1982 and the Stones recently had some italian players joined them at Milan onstage. Also, Bill chose the name Wyman as a friend of his from the military that was a soccer captain, or something like that.

I don't know about the soccer captain thing, but your right about Mick weraing the Italy jersey in '82 and I also beleive her wore the Scotland shirt in concert the same year. He also wore an Argentina shirt in Buenos Aires earlier this year too. I think it's great and it puts a smile on the fans faces.

Mick seems to be at ALL of England's big games

having said that. i've never known him nail his colours to a particular club team so that makes him a bit of a fancy freddie to me. not a real supporter just a floating 'football's popular so i'd better like it' type

i heard Charlie was a big Arsenal (or was is Spurs?) supporter

and Keef is a diehard Aston Villa man along with Prince William yawning smiley)

Is Keith really an Aston Villa man? and Charlie is into Arsenal?

Charlie is actually a Tottenham fan. Ronnie and Bill Wyman have stated in interviews that they are Crystal Palace fans

I've never heard Mick express any allegiance for any club side. Nor have I heard Keith express any interest in the game at all. Keith is more of a tennis fan, whereas Mick's main passion is of course cricket.

bet he said it just for the sake of an answer. I doubt he's ever been near a match at Highbury

Charlie took Mick to White Hart Lane a couple of times to see Tottenham in the 80's. Ever see the clip from the "One Hit" video shoot (it was on a BBC "Dirty work" special and was also shown on "25 x 5") where Charlie's being interviewed and is very grumpy about hanging around all day doing nothing? Its the one where he makes the famous "five years work, twenty years hanging around" quote.

Part of the reason he was so cranky was because he had tickets to see Ossie Ardiles' testimonial game at Tottenham that night but had to cancel as the Stones wanted him to take part in a video shoot - something he hates doing.

eh? what a twat!

Re: The Stones and soccer

Indeed. No proper football fan supports BOTH sides in any bitter local rivalry. Liking one automatically negates any liking for the other. Sounds like Mick trying to be the diplomat and just sounding stupid instead

Couldn´t agree more with you Gazza!
Its impossible and unheard off that anyone can support two local teams at the same time , unless if you are an politician running for elections!
Link coming soon. Im waiting for yousendit!!!

Yes, that seems to be true. And I've read an interview with him a couple of years ago (it was Wenger's era alredy then), he said that he is/was a fan of Arsenal, but nowadays he chose Olympic Marseille because that's a better French team, that the "french" Arsenal.smiling smiley

Any anecdotes on the Stones and George Best?
Did any of the Stones ever try to buy a team, like e.g., Robbie Williams or Elton John?
Did they play in high school? There is a picture in Bill Wyman's book with the school's soccer team.

George Best was a Stones fan. And if you check out that clip of the Stones playing "The last time" on Top of the Pops in 1965, you can quite clearly see the camera zoom in on him dancing (quite awkwardly) on a few occasions. Thankfully he was a bit more nimble footed with a ball at his feet

Nope. Thankfully

If they were healthy, it would be pretty incomprehensible to assume they didnt play some football at school. Jagger though was (as stated above) more of a basketball player and represented the school at it
