Hope it's no wood from the rainforest.

I did build my first (unfinisched) guitar from ahorn wood.

In dutch it's "ahorn" I can not find a translation for it, hope you understand it.

The bodys are made of swamp ash
...and it doesn't come from rainforests

Ash: There are two different types of Ash, Northern Hard Ash and Southern Soft, or Swamp Ash. Northern Hard Ash: This is a very hard and heavy wood. A body will weigh 6 lbs. and up. With its density, the tone is very bright. Its color is tan, but also tends to have heart wood of pink to brown tints. The grain is open, very much like Oak. This wood is also very difficult to finish because of it's open grain. Swamp Ash or Southern Soft is a prized wood for many reasons. This is the wood many 50's and 60's Fenders were made of. It is easily distinguishable from Northern Ash by weight and in it's lighter appearance. The weight of this wood varies greatly, but the lighter bodies are the most sought after, anywhere between 3 1/2 to 5 pounds per body. This wood sings, offering an even balance across the entire spectrum of brightness and warmth. The grain is open and also difficult to finish but well worth the trouble, a beautiful choice for clear finishes. Swamp Ash is the most popular wood. <<

Dude, I was only translating the word 'ahorn' that NICOS was using.

i think it was in this thread that there was a discussion of that very question:
(if it's not that thread, try one of the other Tele threads in the index: [www.iorr.org])
and/or try this site for the historical details: [www.provide.net]

The body is ash, the neck maple.
The '72 Custom could be ash or alder. Solid colour finishes are normally alder because it's easier and quicker to finish, but Keith's previous remarks about the original 72 Custom being "heavy" may indicate northern ash...used extensively by Fender in the 70s and drawing much criticism from the "lighter is better" brigade.
