Ron Wood's Josephine vs. ONNYA
Posted by: drake ()
Date: July 24, 2006 22:41

I recently got on a Ronnie Wood kick and started listening to a bunch of his recordings (solo stuff, faces, byrds, etc...) when I came across the song Josephine. In my opinion its a kinda weak song. Decent groove n all that but what struck me was how similar the beginning riffs are in Josephine and Oh No Not You Again. More specifically the riffs that hit right before the verse (this applies to both tunes). Anyone else notice this similarity? The rest of the song doesnt resemble the tune, just that one riff.

I find You Got Me Rocking in Dangerous Beauty...these things just happen.
But I haven't noticed Josephine->Oh No Not You Again yet.

Josephine is a far better song than ONNYA (and she's probably a far better person that ONNYA for that matter). It packs a subtle punch...kudos to CW's drumming....

I like both songs so it's hard to get into a "versus" mindset...My Ron kick has been dominated by, well the Faces box since I got it, and more recently
"Mahoney's Last Stand" w/ Ronnie Lane, lotsa bluesy folk-grooves a la early Rod & R. Lane, about half instrumental and a few fine songs too ("Just for a Moment," "Mona The Blues")
Jeff Beck Group, "Beck-Ola" with Ron's fat, phat bass - sonically Led Zep meets the Stooges, chaotic & nearly out of control, Beck on his '54 Strat & some of Stewart/Wood's earliest material ("Spanish Boots," is a hoot - and to be followed by Nicky Hopkins' elegant "Girl From Mill Valley.").
"Slide On Live" for the 2 studio bonus tracks, a kickass "Pretty Beat Up," & niice versions of "Josephine" & "Breathe On Me."

Drake, are you sure you mean ONNYA?
Rough Justice fits your description better, imo.
this is what I posted a year ago...

Come on guys - I don't hear an A att all in Rough Justice!
No need for a Capo also.
Startoff Riff is D - G
Refrain goes G 12th, F, D. Thats it

sounds a bit like Ronnies Josephine

which album is "Josephine" on? I recently picked up Got My Own Album to Do and while not blown away, I'd like to explore further.

Slide On This. I like Ronnie's first 4 albums best. I don't spend much time on Slide On This. THere are a few good ones on his last Not For Beginners though, but I know a lotsa people don't care for that one.

I agree, Erik. I listened to Slide on This a month or so ago for the first time in a few years...it hasn't aged well. Too slick production. A few decent songs (Always Wanted More, for instance), but overall it's a lackluster affair.

It's odd, I recall Slide On This getting a lot of attention when it was released. Maybe it was his first album in the "classic rock radio" era, which added up to more press than for his 70s work? Then even mick makes that joke when introducing him in Four Flicks, and he's eating a banana: "Slide on this?..."

Tod, what do you think about Not For Beginners?
If it was edited down to 6 songs or so, it would be a top-notch album.
But over half of it is pointless...

I dunno about "pointless" - but I would say RW has very little to say in terms of good new musical ideas at this point. I enjoy some of the quieter tunes, that remind me of some of the softer side of the Faces. His chops are toast, of course, so nothing that really grabs you from a guitar playing standpoint.

Yes, it's the softer songs that are really good.

hmm, chops on toast winking smiley
quite a few songs from Slide on this can be found on Slide on Live where they really get lifted just by the fact that they are performed live.
so its not really the song material but the slick studio production that destracts from the guitar work.

Do you agree that Drakes thread title should actually read:
Josephine vs. Rough Justice?

I guess I'm speaking only of ONE riff on Josephine. Just the bit right before the lyrics come in. The rest of it doesnt count. I just hear that one riff and then I hear it almost every time they play ONNYA live.

It's rock. They all nick stuff off eachother. Some of the greatest rock songs were partially or completely stolen from other songs.

Who stole from who in the I'm A Man / Mannish Boy case?

Rockman probably has the research tools handy for this one, but I'm thinking Diddley before Muddy......

Muddy heard Bo's audition of I'm A Man for
Leonard Chess and and wanted it for his own,
feeling that Bo was stealing from his 1954
recording Hoochie Coochie Man.

Bo stood firm and recorded I'm A Man in March
1955 while Muddy fired back with the sex loaded
Mannish Boy in the month of May 1955....

Thanks open-g, I didn't see it the first time.
Yeah, all 3 of them are very much the same, but ONNYA is in a different key.
Interesting.

I've written it before, but despite a hideous cover painting "Not For Beginners" has grown on me to become, imo, a really beautiful, haunting album, with no commercial ambitions - personal, deeply felt, organic, with lots of shimmering electric/acoustics, dobros, slides, mandolin, pedal steel (plus bass & keyboards) from Ron, and a terrific supporting cast (Newmark & Weeks, Scotty Moore, DJ Fontana, Ian McLagan, Kelly Jones, etc) - there are rare flashes of bitterness, or anger, in his take of the Byrds' "Rock 'n' Roll Star", and the 2 tracks with Dylan - especially the lilting swing of "Interfere" - are beautiful.

Hell, I hear the first half of the "Daytripper" riff in the chorus of "Rough JUstice"! Does anyone else?

If you don't hear a riff in Rough Justice you don't hear a black man in 50 Cent!!

I did a very lousy job of explaining what I heard. Basically its this ONE riff right before the chorus. Keef AND Ronnie both do it frequently on ONNYA live. I'm not saying it inspired the song or anything, just a mild comment that it has similarities...

Thats it.
