Have recent events threatened the Stones' legacy .....

..... or assuming that the European tour (what's left of it) goes off without a hitch etc etc, will they recover and still have a healthy chance of leaving a good solid largely untarnished legacy ?

My own view is that right at this moment in time, there's a fair amount of "disgruntlement" in the air so to say. Perhaps if all European shows go off without a hitch and everyone's grinning like idiots once again (including THEM), all this recent palaver will be looked back upon as having been a storm in a teacup and the Stones machine will be back on track. I hope so, it would be a shame were it to be otherwise.

their legacy has been put in the vault for the past 25 years or so anyway. nothing can enhance or tarnish it at this late juncture.....

Yes, bearing in mind that the music is 50,000 times more important than logistics f*** ups, that's a very fair comment

i've heard this "threatened legacy" notion before and find it devoid of meaning.
when you listen to the early albums, you can hear the whole freakin avalanche of what's coming.
there's nothing that can "tarnish" that.

True in part. What I was really getting at is how the events of today offer potential for tarnishing peoples memories of the Stones. I think it would be fair to say there IS potential there, I was just expressing the hope that if the European tour goes off without a hitch - that potential wouldn't actually be fully realised. Get me ?

oh well, if you're talking about something other than the music, there's not much tarnish that can be thrown onto this money-grubbing machine anymore....

Oh, I sure do hope their legacy has been tarnished; Maybe then I'll be able to finally get some decent tickets.

Why so ? A legacy is what they leave behind them after they're gone. That includes memories, that WE have of THEM. No dispute about the music, but they're leaving a fair bit else in their wake too, some of it not necessarily what they might like to be remembered for. I'd personally like them to go out in a blaze of glory. That does include a tour that involves less in the way of cancellations, postonements, confusion, poor PR, and general buggering about - the likes of which has prevailed in abundance since the Asia/Pacific leg of the current tour ended. Stumbling their way through a badly mauled European tour and then possibly fizzling out in anything other than a truly "grand style" is not the way I'd like to see them end their days as a touring band. I shouldn't imagine it's the way they'd like to exit the stage either. So I'm REALLY keeping my fingers crossed for Europe 2007.

But what's a cancelled/messed up tour in a 40 years carreer? Seriously, this is a ridiculous question!

It is devoid of meaning, it's just an empty topic that sparks a lot of debate. You can argue about it for days on end and not say anything of meaning at all.

THe longer a band is a working band, the more chances to "tarnish" a legacy. And all the "disgruntlement" in Europe will cease to exist the minute the Stones definitely are no more.

Trouble is to the stones as a bee is to honey!! Looking back, it amazes me all that they've been through, and survived. It just adds to their legacy.
