I Don't Know Why

I just wanted to spend a couple of words on this fantastic Stevie Wonder cover.

I first heard it on the trident mixes boot and instantly fell in love with it.

I find it simply perfect. Original band + MT in the room (how did they get Ian Stewart to play in a minor key?), Keith's open G trademark riffing in a delicate almost slow -tempo context, MT's beautiful arpeggios, again MT's superb slide lead, Jagger's sings his heart out.

What's the story behind it? At the beginning I thought that it was related to having Stevie touring with the Stones, but then realized that since it was recorded in 69 this was impossible. Sure you can see they put an effort in crafting it, why wasn't it released before?

Anyway - SUPERB!

Story is they recorded it right after the message
of Brian's death got thru by phone.
Why not released? Someone knows?

Songwriting credits acc. to Keno's:
(Wonder/Hunter/Pizer/Hardaway)

I think that the question was, why released only on Metamorphosis (1975). Why not a B-Side? Fact was, it was well and finished!

One of their greatest cover IMO...

Also in the London Years Singles boxset. This song and "Jiving Sister Fanny" make Metamorphisis worth buying. Also a couple of others. Lots of crap on there as well.

One of my favorite Stones covers as well. Pure magic on this song.

i think Mick's howling on this record is out of this world.......I love the nasty gritty garage band sound.......it's one of their most compelling performances; I can listen to this song over and over.

I'm not a big effect "connisseur". What is Keith using there? Sort of echo/delay box?

a beautiful, haunting cover... i think maybe it wasn't released because the chord progression and sound is sort of similar to gimme shelter... or maybe because they already had a beautiful cover song on let it bleed in love in vain...

Such a great song. Couple of geek questions for all of you:

Ian or Nicky on piano?

And, right as the song is coming out of the instrumental break (at about the 1:22 point in the song), what is that sound? Sounds like a harmonica but there's no harp on the rest of the song.

Always loved the song, as far as I know it was also released on a single.

Nothing to add. Indeed Keith and MickT duet is simply superb.

Glad to know it once got released as a single,
still one can be wondering why it had to take six years...
But I reckon that has to do with the Klein-fuzzin'?
