Time for a European indoor winter tour?
Posted by: Thommie ()
Date: May 25, 2006 00:10

IF not all the postponed shows will take place at all (if they do they’ll tour stadiums till mid-october), isn’t it time for a European indoor winter tour?
For the first time since 1976, right? (the Licks tour stadium-arena-theatre in five, six cities uncounted).
But they have played a lots of indoor shows in America 1981, 1989, 1994, 1997-99, 2002-03 and 2005-06.

I know they earn much more money if they play America but more and more money can’t be that important? And this time you can say they’ll own European fans something, aren’t they? (I like America so it’s not a question about that).

There are plenty of European cities that will not get any Bigger Bang-show. Like Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, Rome, Naples, Torino, Lisboa, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Lyon, Birmingham, Manchester comes to my mind. Well, there must be hundreds…

I’m one of those who still believe that the Rolling Stones not tour for money but for the music. Music is their lives and I think the kick of enter the stage is what drive them to one more tour. And one more. And…
Naive? Maybe. Pay back-time?

Do most of the large European cities have major indoor arenas/halls in the 15-20000 seat range?

Yeah, I think so. At least Vienna does - not one with great acustics, though.

Imagine the ticket-prices......

I could be wrong on this, but my sense is that the indoor venues in the US are generally bigger than those generally found in Europe. My sense is that, for instance, the largest indoor venue in Italy is the Mazda Palace in Milano, which holds about 9,000 people. In Stockholm, the Globen holds 14,000. Compare that with the TD Banknorth Garden here in Boston - a midsize venue - which seats around 19,000.

No. They don't have that many 20,000 capacity arenas. Also, people in Europe don't want to pay 300 ERuro for an arena ticket, like they do in the US or even UK.

Actually in Italy we have the Filaforum in Assago and the Palamalaguti in Bologna that have a 15/20.000 capacity.

But you know if the Stones were going to do something small Europe should be in the mix. By small I mean arena shows. Winter would seem like an excellent time to do some cozy shows.
They could scale down the stage and just do a very raw show. I don't think anyone was complaining in 1973.
Ticket prices, ticket prices...

I'd give my three postponed tickets for one indoor show.

Turin have a 12000 capacity, (new structure for olimpic winter 06).
This is very good, but what says Bjornulf is correct.

Are you saying then, that the Stones have become so greedy that us poor europeans can no longer afford them?

Re: Time for a European indoor winter tour?

Europe don't have a lot of big arenas. Bercy Paris is one of the few big ones, and it's only 17000 seats.

they're not going to do a European indoor winter tour at European prices,
when they can do a U.S indoor winter tour at U.S prices.

So you're saying that the Stones are too big for Europe!

U2 recently made the same choice, and according to Bono for the same reasons.

Probably the best choice for all like me that have a the ticket for paris first show is waiting until next year for another summer part of the europe tour .I like see the guy under a sky of stars not inside an arena box. We all love Keith because is a crazy man and crazy man do things like he does so we have only to wait Keith feel real good and I don't think play so many times in a few month is good for Keef, so we have just to listen for good times.

ciao

That was a summer tour. We're talking about autumn dates when outdoor venues are unsuitable.

The fact of the matter is that it is pure greed on behalf of the band.

and a whole lotta people in the states can't ever hope to afford it either.
sorta like the antithesis of the rock 'community spirit'
which is real and worldwide....
this a$pect of the latter day stones experience is pretty cynical, negative and restrictive...and will have a ripple effect that makes all concert prices higher.

Here in Germany, we've got quite a lot of arenas.

Bremen - AWD Dome
Hannover - Preussag Arena
Hamburg - Color Line Arena
Kiel - Ostseehalle
Münster - Münsterlandhalle
Frankfurt - Festhalle
München - Olympiahalle
Passau - Donauhalle
Dortmund - Westfalenhalle
Köln - Arena
Leipzig - Arena
Gelsenkirchen - Veltins Arena (Stadium quite similar to the Tokyo Dome)

My thought is that the Stones might turn some of the stadium
shows that won't fit into the new schedule into indoor arena shows.
This would rescue the tour to be finished this year.

That would mean for example Gothenburg, Ullevi, 52 000 - 56 000 tix,
would turn into 5 or 6 shows indoors in Scandinavium or Globen.
That could be a great change if tix would be valid for this instead.

Still have to have in mind that they've already booked dates for fall and winter in the US.

So no full length tour I guess!

Been Stoned since 1964 and still am!

I do not believe so as far as the shows postponed were mostly sold out : Bruxelles, Horsens, Milano, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Wiem, Bergen,...It would be a pure audience suicide. Anyway, Stones are made for Stadiums.

Not at all. I have found indoor show way more intimate and enjoyable compared to stadiums.

Do they need to ask 300 eur? They wouldn't need all the staff they have now. 150 eur would be enough

Yeah, 150 € I could cope with.

Use your imagination. If they cancelled two Adam Arena then they lost 4 days on the tour but to do the same shows in AHOY they would need 10 shows, right? And 20 days. Does not work.

I´m a bit aroused by some post here. I don´t know why but it some post seems to me like that people in US thinks that we in Europe live like hillbillies or something like this.

Firstly. In European are different local customs about arena concerts than in US. We have a different "size" of hockey halls for example but I don´t know why do you make a "difference" between 13 thousand arenas (which is example in Stuttgart) and 15 thousand arenas???? Why? In US are many halls with these capacity too. Biggest hall in Czech Republic is for example Sazka Arena - which has a capacity for 18 thousand people. And I think that this is enough for really big arenas gigs. 2nd larges arena here is T-Mobile Arena (where Stones played in 98 - 15 thousand capacity too).... I´m fed uped with this elitism from people who´ve never seen European shore.......

All the indoor venues in the US have been built, for the most part, in the last twenty years. MSG is a notable exception but the American arenas used MSG as a sort of template. As a consequence, the production end of a rock tour finds itself at home in virtually every basketball/hockey arena in the US. They are entirely consistent with each other so the production of the show can be fashioned in a sort of one-size-fits-all manner. Moreover they hold 18,000 to 22,000 which makes consistent ticket pricing easier as well.

Forgive me, but I don't think there is enough consistency between European arenas to handle the well-oiled Rolling Stones touring machine.

I predict that all shows to be made up will be done before the end of September.
