Love it too. Pure sound of Nellcote. You can see them late at night, in a hot damp basement, bottles all around...
"It isn't so good?" Well, either you get it or not. It's not a proper song. But it's the Rolling Stones doing Exile on Mainstreet... and there's nothing else like that.

How this pile of crap got onto Exile is beyond me.

It's the kind of song that makes Exile special. Off-beat, improvised, wild. If you don't get this song, you don't "get" Exile.

The mood of the song is dark, wet and hot...just like the Nellcote studio was.
Great song, full of tension.

one of the best on their best album - how you can possibly not like this is beyond me. And, yes the Blind Boys version is sublime as well....

This song was recorded in December 1971, at the L.A. Sunset studio. The only remaining instrument from Nellcote is the Wurlitzer piano played by Keith. The athmosphere is not that of Nellcote, but that of Dr. John's New Orleans city vibe.

One the greatest Stones' myths is that Exile was recorded at Nellcote, but if you look carefully most songs were either recorded in England in 1970 (mostly at Olumpic Sound) or in the Sunset Sound studio number in December 1971 until March 1972. There's just a handfull of songs, and only the basic backing track of drums track from Nellcote (Rocks Off, Rip This Joint, Casino Boogie, Tumbling Dice, Happy, Ventilator Blues and Soul Survivor). According to Glyn Johns, only Happy and Ventilator Blues are for the most part recorded at Nellcote.

I think it works really well in the context of Exile, but you won't find me putting it on any Stones mix CDs! Definitely not a stand-alone track. Vital part of the atmosphere of the album, though.

Blues, gospel, "you don't wanna talk about Jesus, you just wanna see his face", the topic is the longing for a mystical experience or so instead a theological reflection; the track creates this mystical atmosphere, one of the numerous gems of "Exile". Stones at their best.

OK, Mathijs, you read the right books;-)
Well, it still sounds like the wet and hot Nellcote to me...

Well, it's fits nice in the album, but as a song on its own, it's completely worthless,

That's exactly one of the reasons that make Exile so peculiar and unique! In my humble opinion, the fact that you cannot take it out and put it in a compilation is a virtue, as it belongs only to the magic of the Nellcote era. It creates just the perfect atmosphere for Let it Loose to begin. Always loved that magic haze of atonal gospel. And by the way, I don't think there are ANY bad songs between Sympathy and Soul Survivor. Pure bliss, actually.

Only an extremely conservative, uptight view of pop music could make you strongly dislike this song. It's a terrific mood piece, captivating... even meaningful. And is it even 2 minutes long?

I love it. Really fits the mood of the exile album. It would be good to have a piece like this on the more recent albums. Not refinished and cleaned up, just pure stones.

This song is beautiful. But because of that fading in and out I always want to hear the songs before and after Just Wanna See His Face, too.

From Tom Waits top 20 albums list

4 Exile On Main St. by Rolling Stones (Rolling Stones Records) 1972

'I Just Want To See His Face' - that song had a big impact on me, particularly learning how to sing in that high falsetto, the way Jagger does. When he sings like a girl, I go crazy. I said, 'I've got to learn how to do that.' I couldn't really do it until I stopped smoking. That's when it started getting easier to do. [Waits's own] 'Shore Leave' has that, 'All Stripped Down', 'Temptation'. Nobody does it like Mick Jagger; nobody does it like Prince. But this is just a tree of life. This record is the watering hole. Keith Richards plays his ass off. This has the Checkerboard Lounge all over it.

Great song. A singular track - nothing like it before or since. I'm still waiting for the rumored 1/2 hour version to surface.

The closest this band ever came to real voodoo music (Sympathy aside).
