Who went to to a Stones show with a tape recorder ?

I admire those who do that, if it is not for a sole commercial purpose .

I will never try, I got too much fear to be throw out by the security. And then, it is over for the show. I imagine you feel really sad and stupid.

I brought my camera in my pants into the Ronnie Wood gig and recorded it. I'd have taped the Barcelona gig with a friends MD player with a good microphone (smuggled in in my pants), but now I don't know if I can still go there...

Yeah, I'm with you. I'd never take a recorder. Risking a night of Stones and 120 bucks is not worth a recording. There's always some other goofball that tapes it anyway.

I don't think it's a very big risk if you hide it in your pants...

Attenting to the Olympia show in 2003, there was two men walking in the crowd. One was a security boy, the other a technician. The latter had a device capable to track the tape recorders. I do no how it works, it is a spie device, probably using an antenna.

They went to see someone, look at him with a torch, and the (un)wise guy was escorted to the door.

You kill me, Nico....no, no one in their right mind will let you in with that tape recorder. You will be taken away.

Its a piece of cake. As far as recording gigs, the Stones is about one of the easiest to get stuff into and get away with it.

A friend of mine recorded his first show on something similiar when he was 9 years ago. I am not kidding.

Yeah, I remember that. But it was a club show, I don't know how Crystal Cat guy managed to tape the show, security was so tight (metal detectors, etc).

It's much more easy to tape in great venues like stadiums and arenas than club shows (bringing the taping gear I mean because to find the best spot is much more difficult).
I taped a Dylan show in 2004 and it was funny because we were about 5 tapers on the same spot and a security guy went just near of us, he was looking for someone who took pictures and the guy didn't even notice we were taping smiling smiley (and one taper had really big microphones smiling smiley)

Taken tape recorder 13 times, been caught twice. Have I learned my lesson yet? I'll let you know.

I taped about 20 shows, been caught 1 time but it was entering the venue.

Easiest: record store gigs or fair gigs, followed by gigs where you have permission but sometimes the venue can be a problem. Arena/Stadium/classic rock gigs almost as easy. A little tougher are some clubs, punk rock, heavy metal and rap. I taped Public Enemy/Cypress Hill 3 nights in a row and it was pretty tough. A while back I was on the way to the bus stop from an instore and briefly staked out a Cypress Hill show. There was a chance I could have done it but I just went home instead.

I took a recorder in at the Houston 89 show but all I got was blank space up until "Angie" and even that was not that great.

I recorded a local Jimmy Page show back in 1988 and a Morrissey show in 1991.
I was so nervous but it was well worth it since neither one have circulated - maybe some day.
But I don't know if I'd do it again at the cost of tickets now. I couldn't see paying that much, be that nervous, and enjoy the show.
Hail to the tapers!

I remember hearing that Jagger was pointing out tapers to security & having their equipment taken away during the Olympia '03 show but,I imagine that was only because the Stones were planning on officially releasing most of the show.

Yikes! I don't like those odds. Its happened a few times out of hundreds of shows. Sometimes at the door, sometimes inside, sometimes I had the bands permission but it was still denied by the venue, other times I was still able to bullshit my out of it and still get away with it. Once Dale Crover of the Melvins told the staff at the door of the Bluebird Theatre in Denver to let me or anyone else in with equipment and the late great El Duce of the Mentors told someone the manager sent after me to let me have my tape back.

I used to do it in the cassette days. Taped the 1975 LA Forum show (last one out of 5, The Boot might be called "Who Went to Church This Sunday?". I'm not sure, I don't have it). My best stuff is about 20 minutes of super 8 film shot from the 6th row of the Forum on the 1972 tour (early show). The camera had a kick ass powerful zoom on it. Brown Sugar/Love in Vain/Midnight Rambler/Rip this Joint - can't remember, haven't watched it for decades (maybe it's worth something - that would be very un-Brain like behaviour to sit on it. Maybe I should find it)

1972, Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens, first show. I had one of those early cassette/radio things, walked in carrying it, security didn't even look at me.

I was too stoned to turn it on, nice acid.

I've never gone in with a tape deck but I have had great success with my minidisc recorders. Me and my friends rolled for a good 5 minutes after seeing that fisherprice tape deck. I had one of those as a kid... Oh man...

Its all about Hi-MD recorders and stealth microphones... That and I'm in my early 20s and I doubt they suspect us young-uns of bootlegging anything...

this is true. cellphones now are able to recording from a line in slot, but not a mic jack. it is very easy to simply get a battery box for your mics and just record straight to your phone. i dont do it simply because line level in is difficult to record on the fly. good ol minidisc can be adjusted on the fly...

There were 8 (eight !!) people at the Circus Krone in Munich 2003 I know who "taped" the show. I was one of the first people in and while I was running to the front (only a few feet, it's a small venue) my MD-recorder felt out of my pants. A few people (including security) did notice but nobody cared :-)

a few days before I was caught with the very same MD-recorder in my pants at the Olympiahalle - the security guard gave me a big smile and told me to "komm rein" - come in....;-)

but anyway, sometimes it's hard and I'll never forget Keith's Rotterdam 92-gig - the guy in front of me at the entrance got caught with a recorder and went into big trouble. My luck - they didn't even look at my stuff and so I went in and taped...
