Evening Gown

Is this the most beautiful song the Stones never recorded?............

Beats me, but it's a good one. Has more of an authentic country feel than something like Far Away Eyes or Dead Flowers (as good as those last two are).

I've never heard this song. Where can I find it? I like the countrified Stones sound and would like to hear more of it besides what you've already mentioned. Any direction or advice is appreciated. Thanks. smiling smiley

Does anybody know of any interviews with Rick Rubin or Jagger where they talk about the making of this album? People always say there was a lot of tension between them and that's why they haven't worked together since, but I've never been able to find any interviews or articles about this. Anybody know more?

Baboon and Rock&RollAngel: You better get the whole album! Official. (One of) the Best solo-albums by a Stone. I hold a button on "I've Got My Own Album To Do" (Ronnie), "Wandering Spirit" is my number 2.
(This was the first Stones-album I bought on the day of it's release)
Buy it, you'll thank me later. Just send the bill to me.

To me WS beats EVERY Stones album post 1975 and is by far the best solo thing came out by a Stone ever! FANTASTIC album!

Lots and lots of excellent material on WS--and yes, "Evening Gown" is one of Jagger's best--but isn't the record a little self-consciously retro?

"Handsome Molly," "Evening Gown," and the title track are all amazing, but there's something about the mix of styles and the production feel that reminds me of "Voodoo Lounge."

As with that record, it feels a little bit like Jagger is trying to shortcut his way to past glories by replicating them...

With all due respect Rev............Wandering Spirit is so CURRENT........it boggles the mind............nothing about that record is dated..........and if only...if only.......a Stones record was produced like WS we'd all be pissing in our pants..........here's a link to a sample: [www.amazon.com]

Evening gown is absolutely one of the best post tattoo you songs. And Wandering Spirit and Talk Is Cheap are better than any of the Stonesrecords in the post Tattoo Yourera.

I agree 100%

The production is excellent. The songs are so fucken brilliant I sometimes cannot believe it, even the cover artwork is great IMO. Jim Keltner and that other drummer (I forgot his name, sorry), playing like hell. In all honesty, Charlie could never ever play like these cat's and the drum work on that album is one reason (of many) why I enjoy that record that much. All the musicians on WS are top notch.

WS is one of my all time fav records. A true, completely underrated masterpiece.

Brilliantly stated Aucoin...a true masterpiece and truely underrated......Sweet Thing for example is as good as Miss You...and so on and so on and so on....it's so very difficult to put this CD away and not listen to it every so often.........Rick Rubin and Jagger did an awesome job

true....I listened to this a couple of weeks ago and was amazed that I liked as much as always....not always the case with stuff like this where after the 'buzz' wears off it just don't sound so good....

Jagger really did good on that one. It goes to show once again that the right producer will do wonders. I bet he would get another masterpiece out of the Stones. I mean when was the last time Jagger wrte like that? And the production is exactly right for the songs. there is another ballad, can't recall the name right now that is almost as good. Forget Don Was - THIS is really close to exile. Evening Gown is in the same family as Loving Cup.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Atlantic released an promo CD called "Wandering Spirit: The Interview"

Here's a part from the interview of Jagger about working with Rick Rubin:

"We got along very well. We knew what we wanted, we both wanted the same thing at the end. We had a very clear idea what we had in mind.
We had quite a few, you know because we didn't know each other, we had quite a fiew long talks about how we would gonna do it. I said he has great ideas, but I don't always agree with him. That's inevitable. We had a quite gritty relationship. Wich I think is good for a record. You have 2 people with very strong views. When it doesn't goes is if you don't reason with each other. In the end every one can argue with each you, but you gonna say how it's going to be, cause it's my record and not yours".

see the interview ith Rubin in the current issue of UNCUT. He basically says that part of the problem is that Jagger is surrounded by yes-men who will tell him everything he does is wonderful and that he couldnt deal with Rubin having the temerity to tell him that he could write better lyrics, etc
