I don't think I have ever heard a "bad" version of this song. I even love the studio--just love the atmosphere and way it was recorded--the SACD version is truly amazing. Find it interesting that they hired one of the best slide guitar players in the world for the studio version and had him play............mandolin!

That's so cool with the Rolling Stones. Take the setlist of 78 as an example....
Miss You, disco
Lies/Respectable, hard hitting rock'n roll - almost punk
Love In Vain - crying blues
Shattered - street talking rap in rock disguise
Sweet Little Sixteen - old, classic Berry rock
Far Away Eyes - steel-guitar country
etc. etc.
And each and everyone of this fits like a glove to the energy of the Stones.
And it's not like proffesional that can play different styles of music, without emotions.... they're really cooking while doing it.

It's just a great song I love very much. The feeling, especially during the 1969/70 and 1972/73 tours is extraordinary.

As much as I love Robt. J.'s tune, I like the Stones version better. Easier to play on guitar but also has a richer sound.

Well gut just keep prayin' ...cause it's only back in 1996 that they actually found a second take of Travelling Riverside Blues hidden in the vaults.

The second take can be found as a bonus/last track on the 1998 reissue

Robert Johnson - King Of The Delta Blues Singers
Columbia/Legacy 493006-2

Like Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey said: If you ever have a chance to by a R.J. 78, get it,no matter what...they will only go up in value.

I heard that even out of shape 78's of his can reach $15,000

This is one example of a song that the more recent live versions can't match the old live versions but, having said that, the recent live versions are still pretty darn good. It's just that the old live versions are an example of some of the best music ever. This doesn't mean that the recent versions are bad at all.Hartford 2002 is an example of a very good version that the whole crowd seemed to enjoy.I hope that we haven't heard the last of it live.

I heard what sounded like a surprisingly strong version--given the song's very infrequent preformance--at Giants Stadium in 1997.

I was blown away because "Love In Vain"--as heard after "Gimme Shelter" on Side One of You Know What Album--is the song that turned me from a Stones fan into a certified, warped, obsessive Stones freak.

A great gift to be treated to that one on a freezing cold October night in a New Jersey football stadium.

two things I would wish for should the Stones ever try this again on stage:

KR get the electric guitar (acoustic fine for the studio)
RW stop trying to ape the MT solo - sounds fake. Come up with something of your own.

Love this song!!!!
The Stripped version is incredible! The acoustic playing of Keith is just great and with the solo of Ronnie and the harp of Jagger it is just a pearl.

The '78 version is also great. Keith's rhythem playing is again incredible. How play those chords is just awesome, ervytime it is right on the money and he changes it to perfection.

I prefer both version to the '72/'73 versions!

Cheers,
Wuudy
