Stu - then Mac joined very late in the proceedings....not sure whether he's present for much or any of the extant recordings...

Aside from Stu, Bernhard Harvey played piano and organ until Ian McLagan was hired two days before they actually started the tour. As far as I know, the "Woodstock Tapes" feature Bernhard Harvey.

I was just listening to Honky Tonk Women from those rehearsals and i liked the piano in that take. Would that have been Bernhard Harvey?

Mathijs, why was Bernhard Harvey kicked just two days before the tour?
I read Mac's book (very cool btw) and he indeed wrote that he got a call just two days before the tour started but he didn't mentioned anything about why he got the call that late.

It's amazing what you can learn here, pals. I would never suspect that the man playing organ on that wonderful boot wasn't Mac! A certain Bernhard Harvey!!

Edit: BTW, after a Google search, I suspect Harvey is this reggae pianist, ain't?? [www.roots-archives.com]

Wasn't Jagger always a bit...suspicious of hiring too many players from the Ronnie/Faces?Keith camp? I seem to recall Mac telling about that in his book. Maybe that is why he got the call late.

According to Mac he didn't talked to Jagger so often and had a bit of a sprained relationship because of the contract he had to sign for the '78 tour.
Mac didn't talk about why he didn't got a call for the '82 European tour. I knew why was suddenly "dropped". Anyone?

Was it only Stu in Europe 82? Didn't realize that.
81/82 seems like the one time they were a little at odds what to do abvout the whole side-musician thing. Bobby must have been in bad graces. And we have had this discussion already a few times, but Ernie Watts IMO was the WORST player they ever had on Sax. Even Leavell shows more subtlety than he. I have boots from 81 where the guy doesn't quit blowing for one second the entire show.

Let's start it again. No just kidding but i find extremely interesting that some people, lik you, can not stand Earnie Watts on saxophone and other people, like me, really like him.

So is it Mac or Bernhard playing those little jams with Charlie? The keys on Star are great as well. Really drive the song.

Yep, I have it bookmarked since a long time ago, but I've always assumed it was Mac who played those rehearsals, so I never checked...

I believe Bobby had finally let his heroin addiction get the better of him in the mid 70s and missed a show, which is not allowed in mick's world. Keith was a mess but never chose drugs over music. Depsite Keith's friendship, Bobby was gone mid-tour and in '81 was not even invited. When he straightened out, i think he apologized to Mick and got back in the mix. I forget where i read that. anyone wish to corroborate?

About Bobby Keys: the reason he wasn't on the Stones '75 tour actually didn't have anything to do with drugs or so: he was on tour with Joe Cocker.

Bill Wyman mentiones in his book that Harvey just never worked out, and they decided to hire Mac, even so close to the tour. If I understand correctly, Jagger wasn't all thumbs up as McLagan was just as notorious for partying as Wood. Rumour also is that he wasn't invited for the '82 tour because of his coke and alcohol addictions.
