Exile - Most underrated album ever?
Posted by: Elmo Lewis ()
Date: February 25, 2006 16:31

After listening to this for the 15428385th time last night, I'm still hearing instruments (an acoustic, a piano, harmonica, sax, etc.) for the first time. I know it's been praised to death, but still maybe not enough. Just one man's opinion.

Some would say overrated - no way!

Elmo, you been drinking??? Yep, it's been highly rated for over 30 years, so what do you want to do; stand up and salute it every morning for another 30? :-)

Actually, the most under-rated album ever is "Genuine Imitation Life Gazette" by The 4 Seasons, but that's another thread.

'Exile' has been hailed as under-rated so much, it's become the most over-rated under-rated album ever, unless 'Pet Sounds' (Beach Boys, as if you didn't know) tops it in that category.

'Exile' is a great album. I always have to play it all the way through. Ultimately, I think it was just another in a series of Stones albums, a very strong one. The triumvirate of 'Beggars Banquet', 'Let It Bleed' and 'Sticky Fingers' put a lot of pressure on THe Stones to come up with something even better. I think they made a good move by producing a rougher sounding album. It's tough to come up with a masterpiece every time out.

That's the magic of records they released in that period, it never gets boring the same as with Beggars.

Elmo a masterpiece! underappreciated by novices or simple "40 licks fans". It like a good wine better with age & successive listens. MEZ

Well, I don't consider myself to be a novice Stones fan and Exile, for some reason, has never really impressed me. It must be the overuse of back-up singers and brass sections on much of the album that annoys me. Most of the songs are also plain-ole' mediocre . . . Turd on the Run, Soul Survivor, Shine A Light, Little Black Angel, Loving Cup, Just Want to See His Face, etc. In fact, I personally think Exile is THE most overrated Stones album ever. And I have listened to it probably hundreds of times; it just never spoke to me. Sorry, but this album doesn't hold a candle next to many other worthier Stones albums like SF, Beggars, LIB, and Aftermath.

Elmo, good point about hearing all of the instruments....headphones help to really appreciate Exile's greatness.....lots of layers of instrumentation.....it takes a lot of plays to fully appreciate it's greatness....most of the tracks are "growers"......they hit ya after repeated listening

And we're having one of those all-day, all-night rains here. Not good for much else except sex.

A Rainy Night In Georgia.

It may have been underated but last year an article in Uncut stated that it may well be the greatest album of all time by any band. Ain't it great to be a Stones fan. And be smug. He he he!

Yeah, I got a Greatest Hits CD by Tony Joe recently. There's a lot more to him than "Polk Salad Annie" (nothin' wrong with that one either). I had always heard "Rainy Night" by Brook Benton - it was good to hear the original.

About Tony Joe, he looked like Elvis, sounded black, wrote like the Delta blues guys, and played guitar like Fogerty - not a bad combination.

Elmo! EOMS.It is my favorite Stones cd. Think the boys need to move back to Main Street. Well, they said you can never go home again. They could use a visit next time they record.

I remember when it was released and in the Fall of '72 it was thought to be a soon-to-be-cutout-bin double album. Like all things vintage, it's improved over the years.

If you ask me, Goats Head Soup is a very good album, nobody was trying to prove anything and the variety of music was much broader.

Exile was terribly underrated at the time of release by the "rock press." But as far as I can remember, the fans have always loved it, and now, it generally shows up in any Top 10 albums ever made list. It is fantastic, and has been recognized.
