A Million In Rio
What was it like to play in front of a million and a half people in Rio? TOTALLY F>@^%#G AMAZING!!!!There's no other way to put it. Sorry Mom. First of all, we arrived a few nights before. I watched the stage being finished just across the street from my hotel room window. I then took a taxi ride down the beach to try and get an idea of the size of the space the crowd would be in.It stretched from the stage to the end of the beach! I don't know...maybe a mile away.Maybe more!
On the day of the gig, I awoke to the sound of several hundered thousand people on the beach. It was a constant roar that got louder and louder as the day went on. We left our rooms at about 6pm to go to the dressing area in another part of the hotel.
For those of you who don't know this, there was a bridge built so we could go from the hotel to the stage( and back) on the beach across the street. I'm not sure it's true but I've heard it rumored that it took Lennie Kravitz 2 or 3 hours to get back to the hotel after his gig there a year or so ago. Yes you read correctly The hotel is across the street. That's the reason for the bridge. Trying to get through a crowd that big is nearly impossible.
We hit the stage a bit after 9:30pm. The energy from the crowd was obviously the most intense I've ever felt. What occurred next was pure physics and metaphysics working hand in hand. When Keith started "Jumpin Jack" it was as if the energy coming to the stage went into him and back out to the audience. It was like he was riding a hurricane. When I heard him I felt this spirit shoot up my spine and I jumped in for a breathtaking ride. It seemed like we were all infected with this wave of excitement coming from the crowd. Charlie seemed to be hitting as hard and solid as ever. Mick looked as if he could have been dancing on air. Ronnie was snaking through the typhoon of sound with that plaintive wail I love from him. Chuck was about rockin the piano off it's legs. We were having the kind of gig you'd dream this band would have playing for a million people. ABSOLUTELY MINDBLOWINGLY ELECTRIC!
Stay tuned,
Darryl
From the stage I could see blue lights on the delay towers. And I could see blue lights as far as I could see.
