Brilliant solo.

It was a good solo. That having ben said, I do not "doubt Ronnie"
it, quite simply is that my ears do not lie to me. I have no desire
to bash him, but to deny that his playing has not declined preciptously
is delusional. I am not comparing him to MT (who, he could never touch)
but rather to his own playing circa '75-'78.

He played well with Keith also, Keith acknowledged him also which was a nice gesture.Just pause for a minute and think that he's sober and playing in front of all these people without the crutch of booze and drugs. Got to give him some credit and admire his courage. I think he can still play and play well.

I give anyone who overcomes addctions all the
credit in the world--it very well may have saved his life.

His playing on Happy was very good--I did think that was his
standout moment.

As for YCAGWYW---just place tonite's performance in juxtapsition
with the Love You Live version. There is no comparison--not even close.
On the other hand--I think Mick is as good and possibly better now.
Similar with Keith and Charlie--so it is not just a function of time.

My favorite Ronnie period is '78-'80--back then, he and Keith
really did weave and his steel playing gave the band a new dimension
that I liked alot--love those Some Girls/Emotional Rescue outakes.

I also think his playing in the '70's helped make the Stones sound
current and I am not sure that would have happened with MT.

I guess, I just live for the moment...I aint comparin' anything to somethin' else. I just thought it fit the moment... Thats the problem with a lot of folks...why do you have to compare....just dig it for What it is...after all, they are pretty damn old...

Best,

JR

To each his/her own. I choose not to buy into
the fiction that his playing is what it once was.
It is hard NOT to compare when you spend as much time
listening to various performances as many of the people
here do.

You started this post by saying "Ronnie doubters".
I am not a "doubter" because there is nothing to "doubt".
His playing, simply stated, is nowhere close to what it
once was and at times on this tour has been nothing short
of dreadful. It further sticks out, because the rest of the band
has been real consistent and consistently very good, some nites
great. That kind of vaporizes the "age" argument.

If you want to "live for the moment" good for you, that is your
right--just do not call those of us who do not "doubters".

I am very chilled, in fact I am freezing my
butt off here in NY. LOL Sorry if my post(s)
read differently.

I give credit proportionate to what I think is warranted.
Certainly others view things differently--that is what makes
these discussions interesting.

My objection was to the "doubter" comment.

That is where we differ. I "compare" because
that is my source of evidence--the tapes don't lie
or get caught up in the moment.

One nice moment I saw was during "Happy," ron's lap steel was in an awkward position or something, and his solo was coming up. He motioned to keith to go through the riff once more before... keith picked up on it, went through the chords again, and then gave ron his cue.

No Glass Slide, i don't think Ronnie has been "dreadful" on this tour. He had some weak moments of course. But "dreadful"??? If you mean two or three "boom" notes during two hours concert, just remember the 1978 tour which was full of mistakes! Sometimes, horrible mistakes. Personaly i'm not idealizing so much his past. For example i consider his "classic" solo on YCAWYW from LYL album as CHILDISH. And i love his solo on CYHMK during Licks Tour. Just a matter of taste...

Absolutely...I have been collecting tape since the early 70s, and have about the most complete collection one can imagine...I listen to them, as well....but you really have to turn them off....take each show for what its worth.....like my friend TB says to the question, "...whats your favorite show???...he always replies, "...the next one...." I have to agree, at least we can still see them....

All the best,
JR

I must have not picked up on that. I liked his
solo on Happy, thought it was real good and his highlight.

MR, I personally did not have a real high opinion of.

That having been said any "objective" critique of his playing
is done at one's peril. LOL

SO GOOD.

I love it when watching Ronnie and you can tell that even he knows he's nailing it... hard to explain, but you know what I mean.

I definitely agree with the propostion that it is great
to have them playing at all--I mean in the mid '70's or
mid '80's for that matter, did anyone think they would still be playing at this point?

Also, I think Bigger Bang is a really excellent, really vibrant disc
(even though they left off the best tune--Under The Radar--I would have made that the first single--that song is as good as anything they have done in the past 25 yrs.

I thought he played fairly well tonite and compared to some of the shows I have heard from this tour really well.

It is just that I understand why "doubters" concerning his playing exist.

What about the Love You Live version of YCAGWYW solo is "childish" I believe that is the second time I have heard you describe it as such and do not know what you mean by that.

As for CYHMK--for me there is only one version of that solo that is truly great.

This is going to sound ass-backward, but I actually like Ronnie's current solos better than the ones from the '70s. When he nails them on nights like tonight, of course.

I don't know what it is, really. Probably a combination of the guitar tone and the fact that his playing was a lot more Taylor-esque 30 years ago than it is now, and who can out-Taylor the original?

I'd even go so far as to the point that I think he exceeded the original version during his finer Can You Hear Me Knockin' moments in '02/'03.

Regardless, I think he has more of a unique lead style now - seriously. Not being sarcastic at all.

It was FAIR, IMO... if you like Ronnie YCAGWYW leads then get your ears on the version from Chicago United Center II, so far and away better and more extended than tonite...

But I agree Ronnie was solid tonite, played great overall.

Have not heard of LL on vinyl in UK. Or anywhere else.
When you find BB on vinyl, the sleeve, on the back right bottom hand corner might say Patents Pending. If so you are lucky. This is rare, produced in first few days of production.

A Stones dealer informed me JB on vinyl is hard to come by. But there was a US release of it last year.

IMHO that solo is nothing special. Unless you were worried he was going to completely blank it up.

That said the band is sounding great and Ronnie's playing, for whatever reason, is getting better as the tour goes along. Let's face it his playing at the start of the tour was abysmal at best.
