More ABB songs played live?
Posted by: G. the Cock ()

First, I'd love to hear more songs from ABB played live on stage!

Second, the Stones have NEVER done very much of the actual album on stage since 1972 with one exception - 1978 they did 8 of 10 songs from 'Some Girls' nearly every night.

Third, only three albums have been played live in their entirety until now and it'd last 19 years for 'Black And Blue', 21 years for 'Some Girls' and 34 years for 'Sticky Fingers'.

...just to throw in another point of view to that discussion.

To prove, here's a rough statistic (I guess you all find out easily how to read it, the songs from the new album only played once or a few times are under the +)

72:
rocks off
rip this joint
tumbling dice
sweet virginia
happy
all down the line
+
loving cup
torn and frayed
ventilator blues
sweet black angel

73:
star star
angie
heartbreaker/dancing with mr. d
+
silver train

75:
it's only rock'n'roll
ain't too proud to beg
if you can't rock me
+
luxury
dance little sister

76:
hand of fate
hot stuff
hey negrita
fool to cry
+
cherry oh baby
melody (77)

78:
full album except
before they make me run
some girls

81/82:
start me up
neighbours
black limousine
waiting on a friend
little t+a
hang fire
+
tops

89/90:
sad sad sad
mixed emotions
rock and a hard place
can't be seen
+
terryfying
almost hear you sigh
+
blinded by love

94/95:
you got me rocking
sparks will fly
i go wild
the worst
love is strong / out of tears
+
brand new car

97/98/99:
out of control
flip the switch
saint of me
anybody seen my baby
thief in the night / you don't have to mean it
+
lowdown
how can i stop
might as well get juiced

05/06 (until now):
rough justice
oh no not you again
infamy / this place is empty
back of my hand / rain fall down
+
it won't take long

Please don't hang me if I've forgotten a song, I think all of you can see what I meant.

what did you mean?

I mean that it isn't unusual they play just a few songs from the new album. Except for the 78 tour, Stones shows have always been 'greatest hits' shows.
That's what I wanted to express. You know, I don't think they neglect the new album especially, it's just their way to create setlists.

to a degree, although two points :

1) higher % of "greatest hits" on THIS tour than previously. "Greatest hits" to me is the 'warhorses' stuff. Theres more of those on this tour to the detriment of 'album cuts' or 'songs not played in many years' than ever before.

2) we're now 6 months into this tour and we're down to 2 or 3 ABB songs per show. On previous tours, you would expect that number to be higher. They were even playing 4 songs from the new album on THIS tour before it's release. It would be reasonable to expect that by this stage theyd have more confidence with the new stuff.

Goats Head Soup had six of ten played,It's Only Rock 'n' Roll had six of ten played (you left out Fingerprint File),Black And Blue had five of eight played up 'til that point,Tattoo You had seven of eleven played on the 1981 tour,Steel Wheels had seven of twelve played + Continental Drift was worked in as the intro music + Slipping Away was added on the next tour,on the Voodoo Lounge Tour they started with seven and were regularly playing five and then they added Jump On Top Of Me at a club show,on Bridges To Babylon they played ten of thirteen.Already Over Me was played three times. This tour they have played seven of sixteen, usually three per night. This leaves nine Bigger Bang tracks not played plus the two songs from the bonus dvd that for some reason were left off.Even if they try a song a couple of times,I think it is worth it.Many people at the concerts seem not to care about the new songs so,I don't see why they can't rotate them and give more songs a shot.

My take on this is that the Stones are trapped in their own game. It may be (it actually is) still a great show, but in artistic terms it is an oldies show. After all, after the Licks tour - which was ok as it was because it intentionally happened to celebrate 40 years of Stones history, didn't we all expect some fresh air, particularly with the prospect of a new album coming out?

By the way - do you think they will play "Saint of Me" in Buenos Aires??

abb's a bust, thats why new songs arent played,
if new songs were played, abb might not be a bust,
catch-22 lol

It didn't meet some expectations but,it's not a bust. It's going on half a million copies sold in the U.S. & it has sold well in other parts of the world.

I think Bruce plays quite a lot.

Bowie did it in 2002 too when I first saw him. 9 songs from Heathen (GREAT album). There was a bit of a dead point when this happened though. I'd just love it if the Stones played just 4 or 5 from the new album each night. That's enough for me.
