...does the block that you enter the stadium by determine which side of the two pits that you stand in ?

I suppose so as there is the natural separator of the B Side. But not certain that you cannot change from one FOS to another one.

In the past they have counted people in so you have the choice if you're early enough.

In Berlin 2003 i was let in with an ordinary field ticket.

Yes, the entrance gate indicated on your ticket is telling you on which side you'll be...

From my experience, changing on site can prove rather difficult...

Gate S is ronnie side, G keith side and you can't change of course. If you want the other side you got, you just have to trade and try the french fan club:
