Setlist Whiners... Do you like to Dance ?
Posted by: BornOnTheBayou ()
Date: December 6, 2005 23:06

The long-running "setlist debate" got me thinking:

Those who gripe about not hearing their "special songs" and "hidden gems" are probably people who attend concerts MORE for the lyrics than the rhythms and riffs... and also perhaps for the "memories" the songs bring back...

Those who are perfectly satisfied to hear Satisfaction and Jumpin Jack Flash over-and-over ad nauseum are probably there MORE for the rhythms than anything else. Also for the "sing-along" experience of singing "... throw me the Tumblin' Dice..." with 20,000 of your closest friends...

Also, there's a "common consciousness" that takes place in the quantum Zero Point Field when a large number of people are doing the exact same thing at the same time with a high level of emotionality... getting a bit scientific there but for a good read of this amazing phenomenon see "The Field: The Quest for the Secret Force of the Universe" by McTaggart...

I'm betting money (any takers?) that those who seriously love to DANCE and SING-ALONG at Stones gigs are more in the latter category and those who are more "lyrically" oriented, and perhaps more "serious musicians" may be more in the former category.

We "dancers and singers" dont' really give a damn what the Stones play, as long as it's got a good groove!!

Nice thought. I'm not much of a dancer but I can do my moves all night long on any warhorse.

interesting theory, BornontheBayou! the differences between people whose main focus is on the lyrics/vocals and those whose main focus is on the nonvocal instruments have always intrigued me - never thought of it in terms of setlist satisfaction (or lack thereof), though!

I don't believe in that theory.
Dance (SINCERE dance - not dance performed by people who want to convince themselves and their environment they got their money's worth) has to be INSPIRED by music (think about love!), even sometime by lyrics provided they're associated with the right noise.
Although I am not a dancer myself (though I move a lot), I deeply believe this.

So, are you a "setlist whiner" or do you love the repetitive warhorse-clogged setlists ?

I like to dance...and I'd like to have "Dance pt.1" in a stadium setlist! Now, that would really be hot!

I'll attend a concert to rock. I'll go to a nightclub to dance. Rock and Roll is to get your heart started, get your feet stomping, your head nodding while breaking out the air guitars. If "Miss You" wasn't played, what else is there to dance to?

Dance, schmance. And besides, there isn't anything more rediculous than seeing a bunch of goofy white guys( I am also white and goofy) shaking their asses to "Satisfaction". I'll pass on the dancing, thank you!

If I was a dancer, I would dance at Stones shows. I'm not, so I leave that part of the show up to Mick and to any hot chick near me.

I do keep constant track of the setlist in my head at all times, though. I always memorize what songs have been played on the tour up to that point, those that I have seen and those that I still need. Without all this knowledge, one cannot properly whine about setlists.

For me, going to multiple shows on the tour is entirely about getting songs I have not heard yet on the tour and hopefully songs I have never heard before.
I get the impression that a lot of setlist whiners get pretty drunk at shows, and if you're drunk, I would think it's much better to have the warhorses than anyting out of the ordinary. I stay sober and aware at shows and go to many each tour, so I feel I've earned my right to whine. :-)

To be honest with you,I would like the Stones to play anything that has not been played out - new, old, dance style song, blues, country, gospel - anything.Heaven forbid them from making shows with a good mix of all of the above. At this point,I'll take even one song that I've never heard in concert before.Dance could replace Miss You as far as I'm concerned.

I really think that some people don't really like the stone's. They just pine away for the days when they can't belive they played that one and Chuck screwed it up. Now there going after dancers. How come there having fun and I'm not. How can they like this? Why do they keep listening? They pawn themselve off as keepers of the flame. Protecter's of the true stones. With Taylor as my true god we shall go forth and break thru my own cynisim and narsicism! The evil Kieth who smite thy Taylor you are boring. HHHHrrrrrupmph. Personaly I love to go to the Stones and dance my ass off. Forget who I am. Forget all the crap that I think and Rock!! There's no science to it. Its fun to watch whole city's break thrue to......get off. Remember understanding is the consolation prize.

I think a setlist whiner is a person who goes to multiple shows and hates the repetition. If you saw any of the BB shows this Fall and it was the first show you had ever seen live, I think you would love the songs because you fulfilled the dream of seeing the Stones-- even though a lot of people are complaining about the current sets.

As a said in my post about "Hot Stuff," I was dancing when they played it the one and only time during the VL tour and that tune tune is far from being a well-recognized song.

I like to dance my ass of to that really hot tune "You Can't Always Get What You Want".
One foot left. One foot right. One foot left. One foot left. Oops. One foot right.
Could continue for hours. It grooves like hell.

And, by the way, you should see me headbanging to (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.

Cant You Hear Me Knocking doesnt have lyrics for a good 75% of the song and everyone digs it. Rambler has a good jam in it too. The casual fans arent shouting for those tunes. Neither are the dancers. Cause the dancers arent shouting for anything. Like you said, you dont really care what they play as long as it has the right groove. So I'd argue you're there for the show, not the music.

... huh? the groove isn't the show, it's the music.
or am i misunderstanding you?

This is a very honest and revealing explanation of "advanced setlist whining"...

The poster clearly tells us that he is not particularly into dancing and instead is into "getting songs he hasn't heard before"..... i.e. more of a "cerebral experience"...

This is clearly one of the main differences between the whiners and non-whiners... the whiners are more "lyrical" and "cerebral" and perhaps driven by the "triggering of pleasant memories" that those rare songs produce...

The Non-Whiners are just driven by a more visceral, dance-oriented focus.

The Whiners can be classified as "higher chakra" types, the Non-Whiners are definitely "lower chakra" types.

This is an interesting post... distinguishing between "rocking" and "dancing"...

I think to the hard-core "non-whiners", the two are indistinguishable... non-whiners and "Mick Chicks", etc. tend to DANCE TO ROCK.

well now wait a minute! Mick Chicks (with all due respect of course!) very often tend to be strongly lyric-oriented, which according to your hypothesis would make them non-dancing higher-chakra types and therefore whiney. so which is it? :E

I can think of at least a couple Mick Chicks who dance their ass off...

... Gonna nominate them for "Stones Chick of the Year" also.

good for you - but my "point" (insofar as i have one) is that i think your theory that lyric-oriented types (a) don't dance and (b) are whiney needs revision. :E

Of course! And as long it's not "Miss you".

Since I'm not able to attend all their shows so I do care about their setlist since I'm looking for some bootlegs with cool live stuff. I don't need the 1142th version of "Jumpin' jack flash" even if it's the greatest song on the planet. What I want most is variety. This goes for everything in life if you're not sick in your head.

oh, c'mon...stop exaggerating. everyone knows they've only played it 1,141 times (actually Gazza can probably give you the exact figure!).

sorry to interrupt, but shouldn't it be the 1142nd version of Jumping Jack Flash?
