anybody know if Keith came up with the riff to this bowie song?....i have a faint memory of reading that a long time ago....either way, it's a great riff...it sure does have keiths type of riff written all over it

Bowie even plays it on the record.

Doesn't sound like Keith at all to me. And it's probably too complicated for him anyway with those single notes

I would think Mick Ronson played it on the record. Bowie may have made it up.

I believe Bowie played all the guitar on Diamond Dogs. The Spiders were history at that point.

Maybe... but the chords are exactly the same as "Satisfaction." I do love Bowie's sound on this recording and was so impressed when I learned it was him. He gets a really raunchy, trashy feel, much like Mick does, IMO, for example on "Crazy Mama."

The chords for Satisfaction tho are the same for many songs (E-A-D). Most popular songs before that were basically just E-A-D, including Not Fade Away. Even U2 uses a form of it in 'Desire.'

The chords of Rebel Rebel are not at all the same as "Satisfaction". I mean there is a D and an E chord. But so are another trillion songs. RR has a bridge that goes A-D-Bm-E (if you are playing it in D). No minor chords in satisfaction.

You are certainly correct. Everyone was pretty much gone by that point.

I stand corrected. I love Bowie but don't know his history like I do the Stones.

I'm just talking about the main riffs, not the other parts. They're fundamentally identical. You could slot brian's acoustic guitar part right into "Rebel Rebel." Both main riffs are playing with the B-C#-D notes within an E chord, working from the basic chuck berry riff.

I don't know what you mean by "most popular songs." And to talk about a U2 song seems irrelevant. Bowie was writing less than 10 years after "Satisfaction" was released. around the same time as he did the Pin-Ups album, before "classic rock" radio and stadium tours. "Desire" is more like "Not Fade Away" in that they both have the Bo Diddley beat, which to me makes them a different sort of song.

You might be thinking I'm critizicing the song -- quite the contrary.

The other main Stones link to that album is that the cover art to DD and IORR were both the work of Guy Paeelaert.

Jagger had actually decided on using Paelaert for IORR, mentioned it to Bowie and David then commissioned him to do the DD album sleeve

The fact that DD came out about six months before IORR made it look like the Stones had copied Bowie but it was the other way round, mainly due to the lengthy 'gestation' time between the Stones recording and releasing their album.

Mick quipped afterwards that Bowie was so notorious for pinching ideas that "you darent wear a pair of new shoes in front of him.."

Bowie plays all the guitars EXCEPT on 1984...cannot recall who does that, but do know it was not him.

There is a great release Diamond Dogs - 30th Anniversary Edition, with a booklet on how the album was made, with interesting interviews etc. Nice bonus music too, like Growin Up (a Springsteen cover) and Dodo.

you're right. Alan Parker plays on that one. Bowie does the rest

Funny. I read that Bowie said that he got this unknown guy in to play it because he sounded like Keith Richards on guitar.
