Is Keith's 'outlaw junkie' image slightly exaggerated ?
Posted by: RockR ()

OK...we're all amazed that Keith's still alive, that he has the constitution of a horse, that he's had his blood changed in Switzerland, blah, blah, blah. But here's a point I wanted to throw out there for consideration and opinions:

Has anyone considered the idea that, while he's certainly done MORE than his share of drugs 'n alcohol, that Keith MAY take better care of himself than we realize, and that his 'outlaw junkie' image, so to speak, may have been played up for PR sake ? I mean, c'mon -- look at the guys (and gals) that have gone before him. Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Cass Elliott, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Keith Moon, Bon Scott, John Bonham. What would keep Keith alive over these people, if he REALLY did as much substance abuse as history/myth suggests ? A human body can only withstand so much.

Now, I'm not suggesting that Keith is gonna go out and join a health club starting tomorrow but you really gotta wonder....if a man can keep performing live music at almost 62 years of age and still think somewhat coherently, there's gotta be a degree or measure of self-care involved. I think Keith is a lot craftier in promoting himself than a lot of us realize.

I think when keith indulges he doesn't do it to an extreme level.

mama cass doesn't count. choking on a ham sandwich isn't drug abuse it's food abuse.

Keith always said people were projecting their own fantasies onto him.
that sounds pretty likely - but the man *is* an absolute wonder.
(don't try this at home!)

"What do you want - what?!"

for all the people into the junkie image romantic fantasy illusion......live with a junkie for one week....then come back and tell me how wonderful it is after cleaning up puke and finding your belongings missing and all of the other wonderful things that go along with the mighty "H" lifestyle....its called "reality"

I think Keith has been mostly cleaned up since his bust in the late 70s. I'm sure he still indulges some, but in moderation. Most of the stories about the abuse from the late 60s to the late 70s are true, though; he was a wild man then.

I don't know if it was overblown or not back in the 70s. But I highley doubt he goes to extreems these days. I mean you still see him with a cigeret but it seems like every time he has one especially on stage he lights it but never really smokes it and when I seen them last month he only did that once during the whole show. As in the past he would have a cigeret during the whole show. So I really believe these days its all just for show and he takes better care of himself then we think. I mean he even looks buffed like he works out some.

Actually, Leonard, he was indeed found passed-out but he didn't freeze to death -- just choked on his own vomit following massive alcohol intake, Jimi Hendrix-style.

Actually, the choking-on-a-ham-sandwich story was a macabre rumor started as an example of dark humor based on Cass' weight. She died of heart failure as a result of both her weight and heroin addiction. Graham Nash, her closest friend, maintains to this day that she associated with some bad, bad people.

I wouldn't be shocked to find Keith has a gym membership.

smile: what is that quote from A Life on the Road?
"I don't have to work out, I play with the Stones.
You do a two and a half hour show a few times a week and
you don't have to worry about working out, at least for me.
If you want any more exercise, go fvck, you know."

yeah we know! and we also notice things like how he just happens to be able to sit in full lotus position:

Yeah sssouly always goggle at that when I see it in Licks doco.

Also worth a mention: When Stones last toured Australia it was reported in paper that weight lifting/gym equipment was hired and delivered to Keith's room.

Slightly exxagerated? Ask his tea-totaling daughter of a Lutheran minister wife of 25 years whose sister Keith has helped make church records. Although Patti might be sworn to secrecy.

Yeah you're right,

There is something mighty suspicious about that full lotus position. I'm 12 years younger than him and haven't got a chance in hell of doing that, or at least not without howls of pain. Me reckons our Keith is in far better nick these days than we might be initially inclined to think - given past record and image that he continues to cultivate. Sly bastard !

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he did yoga regularly...some of those guitars are pretty damn heavy and I can't imagine how else anyone can stay so limber.

Stories abound about Keith playing tennis with Jagger at Nellcote in 1971 and his skiing during the Swiss period of the early 1970's.

More significantly, he was apparently running (!) at Longview Farm in Western Mass. to get in shape for the 1981 tour. Check out the "Let's Spend The Night Together" film if you don't believe that the guy was doing something to pull himself together as he hit his forties.

Meanwhile, he's attuned to the cliche of his image as "the world's most elegantly wasted human being" and likes to play it up...don't believe the bullshit about Stones performances being his only physical outlet.

Picks for the day: "Hey Negrita," "Let Me Down Slow," "Hip Shake," Crackin' Up"

Seems like people dont recognize the possibility that a drug user can also be responsible. In the case of keith the horse got the best of him in the 70s but I'd probably say thats the only drug that really ruled him as a person. Ever since the 80s Keith has shown much more moderation in his usage (of any substance).

Seems like there are some people who just get dominated by a substance/substances, but Keith knows the boundaries. There's a difference between a junkie and an intelligent drug user. The junkie does whatever he/she can find at any moment. The intelligent drug user will only operate in self-imposed boundaries. If you're messing with chemicals you have to be smart, which is why he's still alive. That and if you've got the kind of bank account a Rolling Stone has, then you're probably not gonna buy bargain H, or any drug for that matter.

Intelligent drug user is an oxymoron (and a moron).

Interesting R-rated comment. Was the minister's name Reverend Wilkinson perchance whose wife's daughter is making those religous records?
