SWAY DESERVES A SECOND, AND THIRD LISTEN!

I just went back to the live recording of SWAY from 2 nights ago, closed my eyes and JUST LISTENED and I heard the magic coming through! I REALLY want to hear this in Philly in 2 weeks! I have to agree with those who were THERE who said it really worked even though the lead wasn't lick for lick like the version on STICKY FINGERS. My rational mind tells me this is the beauty of this band and what they do LIVE! I guess we all tend to expect the songs to resemble, note for note the recorded version and that would be so predictable and BORING! After 3 listens in a row I have to say my first remarks were a bit OFF!!!

Unfortunately, I've been unable to feel anything good about the performance. I've listened many times; my wife says it's like watching a train wreck! Mick's vocals are quite bad, blah blah blah...especially the verse "love is the way they say..." He's so out of key and unemotional; probably trying to read the teleprompter and not focused on dancing and running arouond the stage.

Pick your one of your hundreds of favourite Stones tunes. Today, I envisioned TOPS being played at the Garden. OK, they pull it off ~ and get to the the simple, yet beautiful guitar solo at the ending, and it doesn't work. Ronnie can't do it. So you get upset?

One of the main questions in the early '70's was whether the band was going to be able to perform, or just too wasted that night. If they pulled it off, it was cool. Those were $7.50 tickets at MSG bought at the local Ticketron outlet. Now, we shell out $1000.00 for a night to enjoy the band, and due to a bit of maturity, I guess, we expect to hear professionals play ~ or try to play.

Ironically, Keith has picked it up big time since the Voodoo Lounge tour. He's fully charged and ready to kill with his guitar. We just would like Mr. Wood to take charge with his guitar.

I heard "Sway" a few hours ago. I have to say: nice version, good Ronnie's job.

I just heard it for the first time. Sounded great to me. In fact, it sounds just like The Stones! What is all the griping about? Jesus! Ronnie sounded Great! And what's all this crap about Mick singing off key? Since when does Jagger sing anything with operatic perfection? Loosen up people and give the band a chance to live outside the cage some have built for them.

I ain't stupid, I'm just guitarded.

Yeah I'm truely amazed to read anything negative about it. The one tune above all other tunes that we had all been praying they'd break out finally happens and people have the nerve to start bitching about it not being flawless. Im getting to the point where I'm just ignoring those posts. I love this band. I applaud them for taking a chance and pulling out a rare tune.

Btw, everyone seems to have overlooked it but Mr Pitiful was fantastic. A real highlight. Suprised the hell outta me. Unbelievable groove.

Hey drake, was that you that kept yelling "ya!" on the recording?

Since when was it a 'main' concern whether or not the band would be able perform in the early 70's because they were too wasted? I don't ever recall hearing about The Stones being too wasted to perform in the early 70's. Are you sure you haven't confused The Stones (regarding this subject) with Led Zepplin?

hmmm in the seventies Keith even fell asleep once on stage. Listen to some of the 78 recoridngs when MJ is either is coked or drunk his voice is ravaged!

LOL or go back to the 60's with Brain, who if he was playing, may get pissy and play POPEYE THE SAILOR MAN during Satisfaction.

Yes the miracle is that not only are the Stones here after 40 years but that we as an audience have forgiven them so much! Damn they have us charmed!

I agree that it's a great version of Sway. Also, regarding Mick's vocals, it's not that he necessarily sings off key. That would be a glaring mistake. Rather, I think that he changes the melody slightly and it comes off sounding a little flat. But that's nothing new. It's the same thing he does with Satisfaction and the same he does with Rocks Off. He doesn't sing the full scale of the original melody. He's just protecting his voice, I believe.

I hope they play it at least 4-5 more times on this tour. The first version was good, but there is definitely room for improvement, especially in the vocals. The definitive live version of Sway has not yet been played, but I think it will be before the tour ends.

Ohnono - yeah I hope they play it too and put out a better version!
they need to lock Ronnie in a room with the Sticky Fingers version to show him
how the "Leads" need to be performed!! but over all, I'm glad they performed it!!

T&A - have you heard the version from the 1st show that night? I was there!!
Taylor was more "amped" for the 1st show, carla says she might release that
1st show someday - MLC

yes I have the early show as well on a decent audience source (actually two different sources). I think the second version is far better - much longer, too. I also have a version the Olson/Taylor band did at Slim's in SF that year.

From what I understand Carla thinks the soundchecked version at the Roxy is the best of the lot - don't think it was recorded, unfortunately.

A brave effort and so what if it sounds rusty. So would you after 35 years in the closet!!

GAZZA, I knew someone would say " OH NOT, NOT ANOTHER SWAY POST!" but I was feeling a bit guilty about my original post when I said it needed lots of improvement; by reading other's takes on it I realized that perhaps it was ALOT better for the folks who were actually there AND it's NOT important to do a carbon copy of the Sticky Fingers version. SO, I was admitting that I was too hasty AND THEN I decided to listen two more times, then again and I heard the magic, and now I really want to hear it in Philly. I will be VERY DISAPPOINTED if I don't hear it there. The Stones LOVE PHILADELPHIA so I am optimistic. SWAY has always been a real favorite of mine. Do any of you own the version with John Phillips? That cd came out a few years ago. I'll have to dig it out to see the differences. As I recall, I liked that version.
