When Did Mick Start Playing Guitar on Stage?

I noticed he played in 81, but did he play guitar on stage prior to that? And if so, which songs?

Didn't he play guitar on Fingerprint File back in 1975??? I think I read that somewhere.

Yep, Fingerprint File in 75.

I still find it strange.

Having mick "anchored" by an instrument any bigger than a harp still strikes me as weird, particularly because it means he's standing at a mike stand to sing the lyrics, rather than roam around. He's gotta move.

For that reason I didn't mind the mike headset he's wearing for this tour, it allows him to play guitar and move on the stage, and it's hardly visible from more than 20 rows back if you're looking at the person, rather than the video screen.

"fingerprint File" in 1975 was the first time Mick played guitar in concert

Jagger does not play guitar on stage. He just wants people to see him as more than a singer....that he knows how to do more than sing. Sure, it may be turned on but he just strums it. It would just as easy to not have him play then have him play.

It's the same thing when he sometimes plays the piano. On Voodoo Lounge he would play Out of Tears on the piano. Um...you got Chuck Mick. On keyboard is just fine.

It's the same with Springsteen. He has a keyboard player in the E Street band yet on the last tour he had to get up and play a few songs on the piano.

Last night I watched him play rhythm on Dead Flowers. He did fine. Granted, not the hardest song in the world to play, but he killed it.

"strumming" is still "playing"

hardly

he has two, actually

so what..? its his songs. He can do what the hell he wants with them. As can Mick.

are you're suggesting that he cant really 'play' the piano in the way you're suggesting Mick only 'strums' the guitar ?? he's a pretty accomplished piano player and has been for over 30 years. On this year's solo tour, hes been playing 5-6 songs on keyboards each night.

But didn't he kick off the songs he played with the intro guitar riffs? So that would have been impossible. They might have turned him down somewhat once the rest of the band came in. Which is not a bad idea, not b/c he couldn't play -- IMO, he's pretty good -- but b/c he frequently stops playing to sing more emphatically, which works, too. He still does that on "Back of My Hand." But for instance on "Let It Bleed" on the '81 tour, you can hear the acoustic pumping all the way through.

Listen to the hurricane telethon version of "Waiting on a Friend." The acoustic rhythm playing is spot-on. Ron on the other hand is way off.

And he played on Luxury in '75.

I think Baton Rouge was the first gig of that 1975 tour and I remember reading the review and the author finding it strange that Mick was playing guitar.

But I thought the first song he played was Luxury. But Gazza is probably right.

Anyone have a set list of that Gig? Gazza will, almost certainly!

Fingerprint File on '75 Tour of the Americas ... not before and not later

So it WAS Luxury! And he kept it strapped on for FF.

Damn I feel smug. The review I read was in the New Musical Express. The title of the review was "Is it Still Rolling, Mick?". And a picture of Mick squatting down. Loose stripey trousers. And lots of heavy make-up. (This from memory).

1975, he used Ronnie's Siver Topped Les Paul on Fingerprint File
