I haven't heard Keith using so much distortion in studio since 999.
It was a surprise!
On Licks tour Keith's guitars were absolutely clean, to the point that many here complained that they sounded too thin. As far as I can tell from the Boston opening show, despite what we heard at the PC gig, the sound of the BB tour is very similar to Licks'.
What happened in France?
One can easily tell from Jagger's solo work that Mick loves distorted guitars (although his live sound is the cleanest of the lot!). But Keith?
I can remember an interview on Guitar Player years ago, where Keith discussed the use of distortion on 999 (which, if I remember correctly, was obtained using a digital effect). Don't overdo it, was his point.
