Just got the Audio Fidelity label edition of "A Nod Is As Good..." in the mail & it is revelatory, w/ better sound than the box or the original vinyl edition - astonishing warmth & detail. Big soundstage, in-the-room guitars w/ excellent stereo panning, & Lane's superb melodic bass is one highlight. All grunge intact. I've had the album in various forms since 1974, but I've never hear the Faces sound better, & there are details I've never noticed. From UK mastertapes, on gold disc, only $17.99 at amazon (from the label that used to be DCC). I almost bought the debut Montrose cd on AF, & I dont even like that band! (PS their John Lee Hooker vinyl 1951-52 collection is superb too, & their Creedence remasters, now out of print, are great.) From Ron's thick opening riffs & Rod's howl on "Judy's farm" to the slay-me slide of 'That's All You Need' & the closing steel drums on the fade...

not gonna buy this album for the umpteenth time - but it is a true classic. Every bit as good as anything the Stones have done, IMO.

It came out a few months ago, & I didnt want to get it for the umpteenth (lp, Japanese cd, US cd, box-set) time either but the sonics (by legendary Steve Hoffman, whose "Pet Sounds" on DCC is definitive) really are amazing, so for those who are Faces newbies, or have the cash or a good stereo system, it's by far the best version ever. btw My copy includes all original graphics, even a repro of the green Warners label (sides 1 & 2).

Every Picture Tells a Story was remastered by Mofi (Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab) as a gold cd in the mid 90s, but the label went under around 2001 & mint copies can be expensive. Mofi also isnt as good w/ the faithful artwork as DCC (now Audio Fidelity). Try Audiophile International, Music Direct, or other audiophile outlets.
Never a Dull Moment WAS mastered by Steve Hoffman for 180 gram vinyl on DCC around the same time ('97?) & sounds better than the original, by far, but is again out of print.

I have the Rod "Complete Mercury Studio Recordings" 3 cd set, which is a little bass shy imo (unless its the usual speakers-in-my-tiny-square-room problem), but it does have a few nifty bonuses, including a totally different 'single' version of "Its All Over Now" - too bad it fades at 3:40, sounds like the middle of the track - & What Made Milwaukee Famous, which was on the DCC vinyl "Never a Dull Moment" too. Havent played the Smiler outtakes. And the great Faces single (came out under Rod's name, October '73) - 'Oh No Not My Baby'/'Jodie' w/ Wood on bass & guitars - post Lane, pre Tetsu.
