I think the best peformance was REM.
They just walked on stage and Stipe said "Hi, we are REM and THIS is what we do."
Then they immidiately jumped into a killer version of "Immitation Of Life".
That was true straight rock and roll, never considered them as good live performers before.
The Who was also great but Daltrey seemed to be a bit tired.
Other highlight were Sting with great songs and Macca with a perfect guitar sound. U 2 seemed to be a bit out of tune and PF was never among my feves, although it was nicev to hear WYWH and CN live.
Robbie Williams is a great live performer, one of the best ever, but his songs lack a bit of rock and roll.

Oh, I totally forgot our German Toten Hosen.
They opened in Belin and rocked the whole Tiergarten with a killer performance.

The last string of performances: The Who - Pink Floyd - Paul McCartney... very entertaining.
And Mariah Carey can sing. She has an attitude, but she can sing.
Stereophonics weren't bad either.

I haven't watched the entire Philly gig... but from what I saw it was nothing special. But they had one of the all time greats on their list: Mr. Stevie Wonder. Haven't seen it, but there'll probably be a dvdrelease when christmas is coming.
I only watched London (BBC coverage) with some shots from around the world.

The old guard still rules.....Mac, Floyd, and the Who.

Actually from my vantage point in the US of A the coverage was so sporadic it was hard to tell the quality of anything. Almost every performance was interupted in one way or another by annoying MTV/VH1 bafoons!!!!!!!!!!!!!Even the ending from London was delayed and teased for nearly an hour after it was over just to get every last little MTV/VH1 promo in b4 the broadcast was ending.

I managed to fill two DVDs with the London stuff. I didnt record a note from the Philly show. Question of taste, I guess...it just wasnt my cup of tea at all.

best performers : The Who, U2

most promising newcomer : The Killers. Pity it was just one song. Great outfits!

most welcome return : Pink Floyd. Waters' dedication to Syd Barrett was a very poignant moment

un-cool to like but honourable mentions : Madonna, Robbie Williams. Say what you like but I thought Madge was excellent and Robbie knows how to work a crowd.

most shameless : Bon Jovi, Mariah Carey - both of whom used a charity event in front of a billion people to give their next record a free plug and help boost sales

hottest bird : Beyonce Knowles

most missed : The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen

The best performance was Bob Geldof showing the starving little child from 1985 on the screen, and then bringing the same surviving girl on stage, as a smiling healthy 20 years girl with an agricultural education, and Bob Geldof saying "Don't tell us it does not help". That was what Live 8 is all about. I am sure that performance saved more lives in Africa than the rest of Live 8.

Musically, I thought Comfortably Numb and Tell Me why I don't Like Mondays were great. Nothing could ever top Freddy Mercury with Radio Gaga from 1985. But this was not a competition in performance, but about making the 8 men think and act.

The Who - if only Keith and Ronnie played half as good as Pete I have high hopes for the tour!

London obviously had the best performances- how was old Neil in Canada, BTW?- but the downside was a lot of lame Brit favourites, that Doherty guy should be shot for how bad he made children Of The Revolution sound, and the likes of Keane... well, I guess each nation has their own, eh?
Robbie's a great performer but it's still astonishing how they've managed to sell such a blatant rip off of past British glories. Or maybe that's just what they need.

You know you always get these strange colaborations at charity gigs, I was kinda hoping that Keane would be joined on stage by Slash, that might have been worth watching!

I thought Robbie Williams was great and as I said in another post, the best young showman on the planet right now. Agreed the who and pink floyd were good, stereophonics (not one of my favourite bands normally), REM and Travis were good.

The Who, Floyd and The Killers were good.
The rest ranged from average to awful (thinking of Dido)

Without any shadow of a doubt the best performance was the reunion of Roger Waters with Pink Floyd.Hopefully they will reform and get back in the studio.

Now that is a band you could have a serious debate about,Floyd v Stones.Okay they are different,but both of the same class.Both first rate acts at the top of their field.Forget the ridiculous coparisons with U2.

Oh and Robbie Williams not bad for a stage school act.One for the teenagers.He could always do panto or Eastenders next.

And the Who.I am afraid they are a spent force.They should have called it a day after John Entwhistle passed away.Their last great performance was the NYC gig for 911.Blistering.

Not a fan of them really but I thought Greenday in Berlin were excellent even though I think they outstayed their welcome.

Have the last few hours recorded and still to look at the great Who and P Mac.
Looking forward to seeing Floyd too.

REM were quite good too I thought. Stipe may look like a pratt but I like what the guy's about.

U2 were v good but not up to their usual standard for mine.

WTF was with Sambora and that stupid f'ing mouth guitar thing thru all of their songs? Their songs are so crap to begin with I didn't think it possible they were capable of being worse.

As for shameless self promotion I think R Williams was at the gig to get an excited English audience showing America that he should be a hit over there.
I'm glad they must realise he's a twat and that his music is really bad.

He should have been at Philly.

Have you ever lent somebody $20 and never seen them again? It was probably worth it.

The WHO was the very best! After watching this event I think it'll be really easy for the Stones to be No.1. The best music in 2005 still comes from the 60's! No new interesting bands. Daltrey is very strong still.

Green Day did a great job in berlin! "Die Toten Hosen" did allright, too!
