SEATTLE '81 -- WHY WERE BOTH SHOWS FILMED/RECORDED?
Date: June 17, 2005 06:22

As many of you already know, I attended the first (14/10/81) Seattle Kingdome concert. Why were both filmed and recorded? Was it because I was there? ;`\

My first show as well. Well, let's see, they had the cameras rolling there because of the video screen - might as well tape the damned thing if you're gonna use cameras. sounds reasonable.

Boots are around in a fair quality. I had casettes as a copy, but the sound is mediocre.

Both shows are available as soundboards.

The Stones have recorded every single show they have ever done from 1971 onwards. So, all shows from every tour are in archives. At least 10 shows per tour were filmed for personal use (how does the show loo, is de lighting right, that kind of work), and of course all shows with video screens were filmed and archived. The only reason that we have so much of the 1981 tour is that the man responsible for the 1981 tapes (actually an old friend of Keith, also responsible for Welcome to New York) has decided to sell them to a Japanese bootlegger.

Hmm, always thought it was the son of Ron Wood who sold the tapes to the Japanese bootleggger.

Yep, the DVD sound for the 14th is excellent. Although I was so smoked out on marijuana (my boyfriend had lots of it), I actually remembered a few things watching it again nearly 24 years later!

I think there is some sort of implication in U.S. law that has the effect of requiring an artist to record performances in order to show potential that they may be released. This is the only way an artist can claim a loss if someone bootlegs a show. If the artist did not record the show it is more difficult to stipulate that they are being harmed if someone else releases it. Therefore, you can count on every Stones show having been recorded, even though there may be no intention to ever release them.

melilo, I just checked an indeed the good show I have is the 15th. The 14th has the distorted sound. BOBM's postage sounds realistic, but I never heard of it actually. BUt it could be true. All I know is that the Stones record all shows for them to listen to back in the hotels. The Australia 1973 tapes, El Mocambo 1977, the LA 1975 video, the 1981 SB's, all these were recorded for own use, but did find the way to bootleggers circles, mostly through Stones roadies and the like who are big bootlegs fans themselves.
