Favorite Stones Periods

(... and not another Beggars-discussion, either?)

Hello!

What time is your favorite amongs these 43-44 years... ??

Here´s mine:

1. 1972-73 CSB, speed, far out but yet the most powerful rock
fuelled by the glam rock movement; EXile was released, GHS recorded & also
released

2. 1963-64 A guess for the first year, the first busy time. The early stuff
sounds so rootsy & hot & threatening. Wow!!

3. 1978-82. From SG to TY & a couple of killing tours.

4. The year of 1969 in itself... Even if I find some of the takes at Gimmie
Shelter-movie way too overrated, this is a magic year. It almost seems like
no one could make bad music (ok, maybe The Archies & Middle of the Road...
And Lovin Spoonful is also rather unbearable).

5. 1965-68 Songwriting explosion

6. 2003-05(-06?)

Down periods: 1968 (I sense some users angry faces!), 1974-76 (!), 1983-88.

I could come up with some more both good & bad - ...but this is what comes to mind now.

Irie!

Some wag will post 1962 to 2005 as their favorite period I'm sure but for me I'd have to say my favorite period would be 1962 to 1963 when they were a bunch of scruffy kids who were hungry and played the local pubs for love of the music, instead of the huge money making business conglomerate they have become, bereft of the fire and soul that fueled them in the first place. Sound cynical? You bet!

I see that I myself in fact suggested 1963-1973 with the slight exceptions of 1968 and 1970-71. But if I had to choose just one period its 1972-73. It wakes interestng questions if a rock band often is at its peak after ten years. If they´re still there, I think it is. The 60´s had two factors that are missing: Mr. Stewart & Mr. Jones. The latter lost it along the way as we know; but Stu was there until the end. I think many of us tend to forget that Brian was - if not the leader - most often the centre on the stage & for everybody´s attention. His magnetic smile, which chicks (mostly older ladies) can tell more about. Brian was a f*cking genius; its strange he isnt debated more on this forum. Same with Stu... Anyway the genius of the Glimmer Twins came to surface fairly early as well. But a wider discussion on the 60´s would be nice & constructive, I´d say.

Even though I think that Tattoo You (81) is the greatest album, their best periode must be; 1969 & 71,72. 69, when Let It Bleed showed the music Stones really wanted to play, 71 & 72, Sticky and Exile are two albums filled with all the kind of music you like, rock, country, ballads etc. Also Jagger where at the time, the worlds greatest performer, and his clothing where amazing.

late 1961

similar to the way many revere the Elvis Sun period, I find that they never again recaptured the nascent genius of the "Little Boy Blue" years...

Its really interesting how the late 70's early 80's is so popular...

From 1966 (Aftermath, one of the most daring rock/pop albums of its time, if not ever, then to the raging mellotron and psych. noise of year 67... 2000LYFH is a masterpiece!)
to 1971 (the Stones blooming as a new kind of live electric unit with Mick Taylor)

Before and after that timeframe, it seems to me the effect/sincerity varies a lot.

a lot of us probably got into the Stones during that era. Myself included. So it's an era that generates a lot of fondness and nostalgia.

Musically, the Taylor years, no doubt about this. Show-wise, despite the fact that it was the the first tour with the large touring band, 1989/90. They put up the greatest rock show ever with the largest stage ever and they proved after a long, long break that they were - still (or again!) - the greatest rock'n roll band in the world. They were on fire and played really, really well. I know many of you rate this tour as much too clean and not flexible enough, well, whatever...I'd call it 100% PERFECTION. No other rock show ever came close this.

Hard to say which is exactly my favorite since both are different and I really love all their periods because they were all great.

1967-1972
1977-1982
