When I mean popular, I mean songs that radio stations play more often, or more requested...something measured. This has nothing to do if you like the song or not

Most stuff of Johnny Winter, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, in general all that guys which are able to handle their instruments in an extraordinary manner. Stones: Beast of Burden, Gimme Shelter, Some Girls (great on Shine a Light), Black Limousine, Under My Thumb during 81/82, Midnight Rambler, Sympathy for the Devil e.g.

Oh, I didn't read the opener of the thread correctly: most popular, not better. That is a difficult question. Clapton: Lay Down Sally, You are Wonderful Tonight, Cocker: With a Little Help, Deep Purple: Smoke on the Water, Beatles: All You Need is Love (Is there any studio version at all?).

Coming Up - Paul McCartney

That's an excellent choice. The live version with Wings--was the b side of the single and was a million times better than the solo Paul studio version that was on the A side.

Bad by U2 is another song where the live version was much more popular.

if its just sons that got live songs played on the radio more than the studio version thats hard. most people seem to have just listed songs they like better live.

Thank you RobertJohnson.

OK gang, let's see about getting back on track here.
A couple things, Regarding I'm Going Home (10 Years After). I guess both versions are live, but the original is so dull, I mistook it for a studio version.

Also Somebody mentioned a Live Deep Purple -My Woman From Tokyo -Really? where can I find a live version of that song that is more popular than the original recording? The one they did in the mid 80's reunion isn't even the complete song.

Maybe they menat Strange Kind of Woman. Like someone else mentioned. Great live version on Made in Japan. Don't think I've ever heard a studio version.....Back on track. How about Sweet Jane by Lou Reed. The Rock & Roll Animal version is legendary.

I can't even say how watching that clip made me feel again; been a long time, and seeing that 3 and half minutes wipes out all the boredom, and petty argueing from the board here. Man what a gas.
