Famous B- Sides and outtakes
Posted by: Loudei ()

I have to say that "Through the lonely nights" is my current favorite B-side, outtake or obscure Stones track. Current because it could change to another next month.

Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica in 1972 with Led Zeppelin Engineer Keith Harwood on the board and The Stones producing themselves due the health of Jimmy Miller and the Johns brothers. This track I think its a gem. It is rumoured that Jimmy Page plays on it, but I can't hear him. I hear Taylor leads and Keith playing the phaser (or whatever) groove. This track could have landed on Heads Soup and easily could have made It's only Rock n Roll a better album. They should play it live some day.
One of the great examples of Keith background vocals and the fade out jam in the end. Priceless.

Discuss...

Absolutely love this song. They should have done a lot more like this instead of throwing numbers like Silver Train, Sweet Black Angel and Faraway Eyes on the B-sides.

But back to the song. Almost everything is great about it. The mood, the vocals, Taylor's guitar and as you mentioned Loudei, the jam at the end, that's probably my favorite part. Kills me every time it fades out and not getting to hear the rest.

It WAS a B side. Flipside of IORR. Keith said at the time it was recorded for GHS and they put it on the B side or it wouldnt get out at all. But if I misunderstood your post I apologize!

Sometimes they don't know when they make great art I guess. Satisfaction was not a favorite when it was recorded. Not saying Lonely Nights it's a track like Satisfaction, although I think it deserved to be on one of those middle seventies albums... it was recorded on the same session as Tops which made it to Tattoo You (thank god) other wise left in the can. I wonder how much is hidden in there. Probably not much...who knows.

Oops. Didn't see the apology. Sorry 'bout that.

This is funny, this thread, because today I sent a friend an email with a list of the B-sides that he'd like on CD starting with Child Of The Moon (minus the RMK - it's a better version) through Anyway You Look At It. No live tracks either, like the awful Undercover Of The Night or...Beast Of Burden. It stands to be an interesting comp.

I read somewhere Keith didn't like Satisfaction.

Through The Lonely Nights - Child of The Moon - Under The Radar
I think of them together always.

Lonely Night - That track is everything about the 70's Stones, the glam-Stones that is perfect. Weird that such an obscure track sums it all up - keith's phased guitar, Taylor lifting over it, Keith's hi BU vocals, the acoustic guitar and Nicky in there, topped off with a great Jagger vocal and romance lyrics, and a buildup fade i the end.

I've read that also. And that he even voted against it being released as a single!

The best b-side ever is Let it Rock.

Jump On Top of Me, the Storm and Fancy Man Blues are the runners up.

Both Mick and Keith did not want Saitisfaction to be released as a single. Brian, Bill and Charlie did. I've seen interviews with both Mick and Keith saying pretty much the same thing. I'm glad majority ruled on that one! If not their best song certainly their most important song historically speaking.

Yeah, thumbs up for Through The Lonely Nights!

Funny that Dandelion was not mentioned yet amidst all the other B-sides here. That's actually one that could have stood on its own feet as a single A-side in its own right.

All good ones but i would have to go with Gimme Shelter (Paradiso '95) b-side of Saint of Me. Their absolute best moment of the nineties!

Cheers,
Wuudy
