Where the boys go

As you will see in this issue, the year of 1996 will be the year of solo projects for the former and present members of The Rolling Stones. Too bad for the Far East and Brazil/Argentina when they had to cancel the plans for the spring tour, and extra leg of Voodoo Lounge. Still, it made a lot more room for personal projects, which keeps all of the Stones happy.

Once all the solo projects have been finished this year, and probably in-between too, the Stones will start works on another album release, which would be followed up by another tour, most probably to start in 1997. Many people expect the same type of touring schedules as in 81/82, 89/90 and recently 94/95. Still, don't be too sure this will be the standard USA August '97 startup kinda tour!

They had some plans for arena dates, and playing in medium size arenas like Madison Square Gardens can be done any time of the year, remember. Also, the success of doing combinations of small and large venues was ideal for press coverage. Ideally, we could see both small club gigs, to get press attendance and satisfy the egos of the Stones and the hard core fans, plus large scale venues to cover the cost and the masses who still deserve to see the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world!

-----------------

Ronnie spends much of his time at home in Ireland (Kildare), but rumours are he will take part in the Faces reunion later this year. Rod Stewart, Ronnie, Ian McLagan and Kenny Jones will do this mini tour to collect money for Ronnie Lane and MS research funding. By the way, Ronnie went to Rio to see the great carneval, and then he went back to Brazil in May to exhibit his art. He has done five new paintings inspired by the Voodoo Lounge tour, see separate story.

Mick Taylor has been doing his mini tour in Europe this spring, see separate story. He will continue playing selected blues/jazz events this year.

Bill has been busy with his new family, and seems to enjoy life as a family man 100% these days, having a wife and two small kids to take care of.

Keith has been doing some recordings in Jamaica, reggae style. It's uncertain if those will show up on his next solo recording, or if he will do his country music style record, which he has been talikng about. Now that he just got to be a grandfather (Ella Rose, daughter of Marlon, born in late May), he might find it natural to wind out some of all the nice ballads he is doing privately!

Mick has been all over, buying film rights, and visiting clubs such as Bottom Line (see photo in this issue), and Don Hill's, where he saw Donovan Leitch (son of Donovan), heading his band Nancy Boy. Also, Mick has been busy traveling to Atlanta, not for the Olympics this summer, but for doing recordings with super producer Dallas Austin (TLC, Madonna, Michael Jackson).

Charlie was first to release a new solo album, as you can see on the following pages, and you may catch him on tour in selected places around in July.

This is the list of concert dates for the Charlie Watts Quintet at time of going to press. Watch out for more dates/changes:

July 4 Montreal Jazz Festival, Canada

July 6 Massey Hall, Toronto, Canada

July 10 David Letterman Show, New York

July 11 Supper Club, New York

July 13 Warfield Theatre, San Francisco

July 15 Henry Fonda Theatre, Los Angeles

July 23 Shepherd's Bush Empire, London

PS. The Supper Club venue is replacing the formerly scheduled Carnegie Hall.
