You always have to consider the times. In late 60s/ early 70's Rock music it was all about lead guitar playing. I remember critics from 1970 shows writing of "just uninspired, simple RocknRoll without any virtuoso performance". A few years later with punk it all changed. Woody coming in at the right time again.

Sorry. But to me most of the rock stars especially from that era who'd died late 60s/ early 70's were already at or even past their peak. Brian,Janis Joplin,Jimi Hendrix,J.Morrison . . For different reasons I wouldn't see a long great career for them in their later years. And yeah, that even goes for Hendrix.

BTW - People can very well be productive on heroin. Like often it depends on dose and length of addiction. Not so with mandrax. Just look at Brian on those well known video/photo recordings from the Beggars sessions.
