Quoteexilestones HAMPTON Hampton Roads, VA December 19, 1981 backstage. I was in Hampton Roads, VA for the last show of the Stones’ 1981 American tour. Michael Halsband was the tour photographer and Govinda Gallery was about to have the first exhibition of Halsband’s remarkable photos of musicians. Michael had invited me down to the two gigs at Hampton Roads and took me along t

Quotehopkins Love me some Mott. Sure do. After and including stones output espesh '72, fair to say this was my 2nd favorite band no doubt about it at the time. Our young teen band copied lots of their songs. We did Rock and Roll Queen a hundred times in two hundred ways; the song just always works. This was the band we'd take over the juke-boxes with in every bar as soon as we were lega

Gotta give my vote to Hampton '81 (I was there), perhaps one of the longest versions ever, with the band locking into a classic guitar weave. But I agree that 1978 without the sax riffing was quite amazing too. For sake of completeness, I need to mention the No Security B-stage version the second night in Washington DC. That was the closest thing I've seen/heard to the 1978 guitars

My vote goes to: Jump on Top of Me - Maybe the best track from the VL sessions - love the guitar weave Who's Driving Your Plane? - Could have fit in on Blue and Lonesome Honorable mention to: Let it Rock - It's a live cover so it belongs in another category with some of the live non-album B-sides. QuoteChacho The 1978 tour was number 4 in The Stones 5 most important tours. 1981 was the "last tour". I saw all of them but 1978. To this day I do not know how I missed getting tickets, with WNEW FM playing 12 hours a day, I still missed getting the tickets for the New York area. (and I never was in to traveling more than 75 miles for ANY concert) The New York shows were the Ca

I was also at the Philly '78 show with a set list crammed with Some Girls tunes that had only been out for a week or so. Of course I loved it, but it got a bad rap over the years. So when they came back to the same stadium to open the 1981 tour, it seemed like they were trying to make amends with the long and varied set lists over two days. Now those shows also have a bad rap in historica

Saw shows in NYC and near Philly 4 days apart. Two completely different set lists. They are one of my favorite live bands . . . ever.

Something you could easily miss . . . There's a section on Stones in the studio where you can listen to several tunes with fake studio mixing board. You can adjust the faders up or down for vocals and instruments. Listen to Rocks Off with just Nicky's piano. A true revelation of his subtle but important contribution to the band's sound in those years. Lovely. HBK

Here's a treat if you have a chance. There is a part of the Exhibitionism display where you can put on headphones and control the faders on an ersatz mixing board for several Stones tunes. One is Rocks Off. Turn down all the faders except for piano and listen to the entire tune with just Nicky. It's really cool to hear him laying down the foundation so clearly and out front. Worth

I always liked to imagine that if Keith and John were in a band in an alternate universe, it would be the Clash: Mick Jones = Keith Joe Strummer = John. What alternate universe band would be Mick and Paul? HBK

Two guitars, bass and drums is optimal IMHO. That's four pieces.

Yo, Glimmerman. Thanks for the Left Coast feed. That whole paragraph after the Route 66 question reveals the musicologist in Keith. Love it when he goes in that direction. HBK

I'm one of those people who followed FM well before the Buckingham/Nicks era and pretty much jumped ship after they became mainstream popular and played endlessly on AOR FM radio. I generally liked those BN era LPs but just got sick of hearing them. To this day I still play Bare Trees and Mystery to Me in my regular rotation. Big fan of the Welch/Westan/Kirwan era not to mention Peter Gree

I was 16 living in north New Jersey when Venus was in heavy rotation on New York's WABC. I thought it was hilarious when my Mom became outraged at the lyrics. She thought it was "I'm your fetus". True story. HBK

Pretty minimal packaging. The front cover art can be reversed to make it look like either album depending on your preference with original LP front/back art on front and inner back. Otherwise front is IGMOATD art and back is a photo of Now Look with a track listing for both LPs. No bonus tracks. No claims or credit for remastering other than the words "original recording masters - limi

QuoteDandelionPowderman QuoteHouseBoyKnows I was hoping to find news about the Ron Wood reissues on this thread. Not more esoteric musings on B&L. Like, does anyone know if there will be outtakes or alternate takes? Remastering? HBK There are no news, other than the 2CD-release (without bonus material) of his two first albums. I'm sure that was mentioned here in this thread. Delt

QuoteGasLightStreet Although they spent months on SOME GIRLS, BLUE AND LONESOME has that kind of vibe going with it - it sounds vibrantly fresh ie different - on the edge of being abrasive. Looking at the amount of material they cut for SOME GIRLS, they were just flinging ideas all over the place. They did the same with BLUE AND LONESOME only with 12 songs instead of 40 something (being cover

I recently had a bunch of Stones tunes on random play and When Your'e Gone came on. For a few seconds I thought it was track from B&L. Then I had to go look at the album to make sure it was a Jagger/Richards/Wood composition. Anyway, seems they could make that December 2015 B&L sound back in the 70s when they felt like it. HBK

I was determined and lucky enough to see 14 shows up and down the east coast from Philly to Hampton. I also met and remain friends to this day with a great group of hardcore Stones fans. The non-musical highlight was weaseling my way into Keith's (and Bobby's) backstage birthday party after the Hampton pay-per-view show. Still have the frozen piece of birthday cake. . . . sort of sil

I feel sorry for the people who "don't get" Bruce. Even more so for those who actually bad mouth him. Most in that group who I've spoken with have never actually seen him live, but probably would not like it anyway with their preconceived bias. I've been going to concerts of all the great bands for almost 50 years. The ones I still don't get are the Grateful De
