I wasn't a fan of the beard either. But even though it happened in the same year, I wouldn't consider putting it anyway near the tragedy of a young fan committing suicide. A sad and memorable story, hb. Thanks for sharing.

Condolences to his friends and family. Sad to read of the passing of a well-known byline around here. If the loss of life wasn't tragic enough, there's a part of me that finds it ironically unfair that a long-time Stones fan would die just prior to the long-anticipated release of their new album. I know--it's only rock n' roll... RIP.

I saw the Dwight Twilley Band at the Roxy when "Twilley Don't Mind" was released. I recall they did a cover of "Expressway To Your Heart" at some point during the show. Dwight Twilley had the talent and the looks, and should have been a big star...but it just didn't happen. A bunch of bad record company decisions got in the way. For instance, there were t

In the 60's, McCallum was considered the coolest spy on TV by all the kids at my school because he had long hair! He hosted the music film "The Big TNT Show" and if he wasn't exactly a Rock Star, he was sort of Rock Star adjacent. When I was nine I wanted to be David McCallum. RIP.

Songs For Beginners is such a strong album. By himself he did a record as good as anything by CSN/Y. Looking back at their solo discs, it's too bad for Crosby and Stills that they couldn't check their egos and keep CSNY as an ongoing recording unit in the early 70's. If you were to combine the best of Crosby's record and the first two Stills discs, and then add cuts from

I heard "Miss You" on KLOS in L.A. while driving today, which brought me back to the first time I heard it play (also driving) in '78. After it played, the DJ said that the Stones had a new album and he would be playing "a cut" from it in about an hour. I tuned in again an hour later and "the cut" turned out to be "Angry." I had already heard it a

There are these two guys--one is 80 and the other is almost 80--that some people have said should retire...for something like the last 40 years! But as of this writing, they are still going strong.

QuoteHairball I was also at this show, and honestly don't recall YGMR being played at all - some things are best left forgotten I suppose. What?? I'm not a big fan of You Got Me Rockin' either...but their performance was on fire that night...and the moment when Jagger sang, "I was a pitcher.." and the screen showed a clip of the Angels winning their first World Se

I remember when this 1971 film The Last Days of the Fillmore came out but I didn't see it until recently. Bill Graham is the focus here and you get a sense of how big and sprawling the whole SF scene really was. There was a whole lot of history lived in a few short years.

Interesting. My wife and I are NRBQ fans, and in 2008 we went to St. Louis for a trio of shows by the Terry Adams Rock n' Roll Quartet (which Terry would start calling NRBQ a couple of years later). Beatle Bob was at the third show which was at a club called Off Broadway. Everybody there seemed to know him. We talked for a few minutes and he was a very nice fellow. Visually, he di

Happy Birthday to Mick Jagger, the most legendary of all Living Legends and The Man Who Changed The World in more ways than we can count. Growing up in public, he redefined Youth in the '60's, and throughout his life has shattered the glass ceiling of the expectations of various ages. He's a Soul Survivor and I thank him for his life's work. It's a gas. Keep on

Nice episode! I found myself rewinding and pausing some of the quick pans of your collection to get a better look. There was a shot with the Street Fighting Man picture sleeve--too bad they didn't highlight that!

When Carl Wilson died, David Marks--who had been a mostly forgotten trivia question footnote for years--was welcomed back into the Beach Boys. This is good publicity. Mick Taylor should keep his schedule clear.

QuoteThePaleRider Steven Tyler is older than Robert Plant I wouldn't have thought that.... Just by a couple of months. Tyler was born in March of '48, while Plant was born in August. It's easy to assume that Plant is older because the first LZ album came out in January of '69 when he was only 20 years old. The first Aerosmith album came out in January of '73, but

My introduction to (post-Animals) Alan Price was the 1973 film O Lucky Man! where he performs the soundtrack and appears throughout. It was a breakout moment, and I think a lot of people expected him to have a higher profile after that

Don't look for musical reasons. Or even levels of fame at one time or another. Rock criticism is based on the code of the schoolyard: It's all about what is considered to be "cool."

I like Sheryl Crow enough, but I don't consider her as significant as say...Joe Tex, or Sparks. She is a very talented and great at evoking the style of old records. I put her in the same league as Nick Lowe. Nick's been around a lot longer, but Sheryl gets in first in the name of equity.

Jimmy Miller is listed as "producer" but he wasn't there! You could make the argument that his post-production of those tracks (mixing, etc.) made him the Producer (a term that can mean a lot of different things but is not strictly defined), yet I wouldn't give him that credit for those recording sessions.

That reminds me of the story of the reunion performance of the original Alice Cooper band that was held in a record store. It too, was kept a secret. The fans that had gathered there had been told it was a signing event for a new book written by bassist Dennis Dunaway. What a great way to insure the audience consisted of real fans of the original group!

Even though it was the title track of their last studio album, I don't recall the song "Ooh La La" getting any airplay at all when it was first released in '73. You wouldn't know it now, but it basically flew under the radar for years and years. It goes without saying that everyone was much younger then. (By about 50 years...!) The theme of the song really didn

Midnight Special and Don Kirschner's Rock Concert also exposed the rock audience to Black R&B acts in an era when the supposedly free-form FM AOR radio stations playlists were actually less diverse than the scorned Top 40 AM radio format. Like this 1974 James Brown performance.

Midnight Special would air on NBC after the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson at 1:00AM on Friday night (actually Saturday morning) ABC had In Concert, which came on earlier at 11:30PM on Friday night. The Midnight Special episode with Faces was a "special" one indeed. It wasn't filmed in the studio as usual, with multiple acts performing. I believe they were the only group
