Anybody here listens to recent recordings by Irma Thomas? Have always been a great fan of hers, my favourite soul singer by a few miles. She restarted her recording career in the 90s and is still up and going, voice untouched, if anything it's deeper than ever and her storytelling ability is so mature, moving and serene. She's on top of her game and over 65 (if you see what I mean).

I agree I am astonished by Jagger's total lack of effort of this - and it's not even difficult! ??

I did this best of for myself a few months ago and am still enjoying it. Covers many periods and also has quite a few hits. 1. JJF 2. Down the road apiece 3. Tumbling Dice 4. Beast of burden 5. Harlem Shuffle 6. You got the silver 7. Honky Tonk Women 8. Miss you 9. Paint it black 10. Sympathy for the Devil 11. New Faces 12. Let me down slow 13. Rocks off 14. Under my thumb 15. St

I agree that the voice sounds quite poor. What a pity, Jagger sang so well that tour and he had to be unwell on that occasion! I'd actually had been in favour of a few overdubs... She was hot especially sounds awful to me, sorry... Even the guitar intro is sloppy, and then the singing during the first chorus is simply nowhere.

On 40L, Beast of Burden is cut as well (same short version as on Sucking in the 70s), and also Miss you, what a shame to edit out the sax solo... Of course if you add the tracks, 40L is unbeatable, but as a compilation to be fond of, I think it lacks personality so to say... It has no specific concept, and the cover is ugly, and in a way it comes too late for us to develop an attachment to it

Fabulous Ronnie indeed - was anyone reminded of Mick Jones in the heyday of the Clash? Mick's solo has enriched a lot since Live Licks. Great tonality, great build-up. Also Keys' solo is more interesting. So they DO still improve! Good to know!

One favourite moment since first time I heard it: "You oughta see my shakin' hands" on Think I'm Going Mad. And that whole song. Heart on sleeve Mick. Another: the spoken part of Beast of Burden, "You can put me out...I am rich enough, in love enough?" And the whole Cops and Robbers. Yep, I like Jagger most when he speak/sings.

Big big jazz fan. I like all the classics, but lately I'm deep into the experimental european scene (many based in Berlin), any jazz fan should check the following names; tough stuff, but I swear it's amazing. -pianists Aki Takase, Sten Sandell, Alex von Schlippenbach -Trumpetist Axel Dorner -bass clarinestist Rudi Mahall -Drumer Paal Nilseen-Love there are many many more... Hi Bassplayer, I'm a big jazz fan, so if I may, my two sents worth: An obvious beginning for a bassist would be "Mingus Ah Hum" (by Charles Mingus of course). Fantastic, as rich as it is accessible, funky and subtle. A must. Then, yeah, Coltrane, "Love Supreme". With Coltrane I think you should start straight away with that very complex work, because although you g

Aww, I still need my precisions! Because on SACD, if I'm right, Paint it black is stereo on Aftermath US, but mono on Singles box set. Same with other songs which in SACD, appeared both in stereo and mono. So for us who have not bought all the SACDs,which are the mixes on Rolled Golled? Sorry for being a pain!

Hi Kent, Sorry but I'd love to know, song by song, if "Cloud ", " Play With Fire", "Satisfaction" and "Paint it Black" are in true stereo. The reason for this is that I am not as hardcore as you and I haven't bought all the CDs. So I have none of these songs in stereo (except on boots) and if Rolled Gold was a package where I'd find them al

I agree with Bassplayer, but I don't see it as a weakness. I'd put it this way: it feels Mick is giving lots and lots, but needing very little. It does not look as if he's feeding from the audience for energy (although surely he is): it seems, rather, as if he comes with his own, unlimited stock. This is why I am awed everytime, and what makes him, in a way, the ultimate superstar

Billie Stewart - Summertime - I think beats Janis' version by a mile. Oustanding. One observation: one singer, according to me, beats all the ones he covered and was covered many times without ever being equaled: Sam Cooke. His readings of Cry me a river, Solitude, These Foolish Things are fantastic, The Stones covering Good Times are pitiful, as is Otis (whom I love) on Shake or A Ch

Time is on my side better by the Stones than by Irma Thomas?? NO WAY! Harlem Shuffle, though, I think tops the original. Rare gem: Syl Johnson blows the Beatles away on Come Together Irma Thomas raises An Peebles' "Needed Somebody" quite a few steps on her album "The New Rules", Rounder, 1999.

Still cool to get the Paint it black stereo. Check out the review on Amazon.co.uk: it's obviously an add, and says the collection "boasts such classic tracks as... stairway to heaven". Can you believe this? Who writes these things?

nice cover. But you can see the tracklisting on amazon.co.uk, and that's a disapointment in my view (but of course, we are bound to disagree with the selection on a best of). At least I would have liked to find "the wild colonial boy"; also, I think Party Doll and Secrets should have been included.
