I think "The" was more commonly used in the 60s and 70s because it was trendy at the time (The Beatles, The Who, The Doobie Brothers, etc). I don't know if this advice holds up for all shows but I was in a similar situation in NY. I was hoping for some resellers to drop the prices a few hours before the concert but they just got more and more expensive by the hour. And as you already pointed out, NY wasn't even nearly as tough as Pasadena. As I said, not meant as a general advice but just my experience in NY.
