QuoteGazza Is there any point in playing warhorses when there is no audience? Or do they reckon people will be dancing on their settees? Also, it would make a loss. I’m sure they love playing together and all, but I’m having a hard time imagining the pitch to Mick of “would you like to spend several million $s on this...”

Great shot. Hey Keith, leave the hair dye out this time. It's fine.

Quotedoitywoik Finally made it to listen to the whole new album in one go. It's a good album, not any worse than anything they did previously. OK, Daltrey is no longer in his twenties and sings in a lower register but for me at least that's no problem. Certainly not the kind of album with which some old dudes quickly want to cash in one more time. I find it interesting how many "

I've seen Q&AL live a couple of times now and - a bit like the recent Fleetwood Mac incarnation - it's great as long as you don't think about it too much. Brian still plays phenomenally well, his playing went off the rails a bit toward the end of the Paul Rodgers era but he's as good as ever these days. Go see one of rock's best guitarists playing one of rock's b

Keep in mind that the band decides how many shows they want to play over how many weeks, and promoters find the most economic way of delivering that arrangement. It's not all about whether they can sell a second night these days - even the two cities that got second shows last year very likely had alternate cities they would have played a single show on those nights if they couldn't hav

QuoteDGA35Yes, that's why Keith would wear headphones during those songs, to make sure he was keeping time with the pre-recorded sections. Van Halen did the same with Right Now with Alex having to wear headphones to keep the same timing. VH even mentioned The Who using prerecorded music during concerts as a kind of justification for them using it, too. Funny fact about Keith’s use of hea

One of the funnier “bands behind the stage” was the percussionist behind Mick Fleetwood in 2009 or so... FM have used a percussionist since at least ‘97, and have never been secretive about it (he’s shown a few times in the Boston 2004 film), but for some reason when he wasn’t playing percussion but actually backing Fleetwood on a more or less full kit, he disappears behind the drummer. QuoteMadMax Am I the only one who Thinks Endless Wire pis*es all over the new one? EW is a wonky record in the same vein as Who By Numbers and Who Are You. The new one sounds like U2, and as Dandy pointed out, that autovox thing going on makes me cringe. Mike Post Theme, Marty Robins,,Black Widow's Eyes and the EW opera are up there with the best of The Who, the new one doesn't have on

Quotegeorgie48 QuoteThe Sicilian Didn't The Who use Simon Townshend off the stage for years to add fill in sound? Both on and off stage, but not in the 1971/1972 period. He was too young (born in 1960). The stages used by The Who (Liverpool, Amsterdam) in that period were very simple ... no curtains. Occasionally a guy appeared on stage modestly doing something to equipment at the backgrou

One of the things I like a lot about this record is it really does sound the way the The Who sound on stage these days. Roger's voice, Starkey's toms, Pino's bass, and Pete's slashing away - listen to any modern (esp '02-07) version of Anyway Anyhow Anywhere, or 5:15, and it sounds... like this record. The Who might not be "a band" in the way they were in the 70

QuoteLynd8 There are stories about U2 doing it too U2 have used backing tapes since 1984, and an offstage keyboard player since 1991. It, too, is not a secret, but the official recording of their 2015/2018 shows is pretty depressing with respect to just how much is on tape. What happened to coming up with "road" versions of songs that could be played just by the people on stag

The Stones do find ways of making Keith sounding noises in the spaces where Keith isn’t playing, but it’s not Blondie behind the curtain, it’s Chuck’s B3 or overdriven Wurly very much in front of the curtain. It’s not a secret.

QuoteWorriedAboutYou QuotecrholmstromYeah, Pete confirmed in that recent Rolling Stone interview that they recorded the album completely separately from each other. I think it really shows. The album feels flat and disconnected. And if Rog had been in the studio with Pete maybe they could have edited some of the dreadful, cringeworthy lyrics. Roger has said a couple of times that he tweaked the

QuoteHairball Quotebye bye johnny There's a fan forum on the official site - Thanks bye bye johnny. Also forgot to mention for those on facebook, there's quite a few fan pages and groups dedicated to The Who - type in Who in the search. whochat.proboards.com is the main fan-run one, I think, though it's not as busy as IORR by a long way.

Quoteyorkshirestone rumours of more european dates next summer - hope this comes off. They seem to like summers in Europe, whilst just adding a couple of massive baseball gigs in the US afterwards The last proper US arena tour was in 2014... I know we’ve had a handful of stadium gigs since, but it almost always requires lengthy traveling to the gig, unless you live in a particularly lucky US c

QuoteDandelionPowderman BTW, wasn't one of their "new" songs on Pete's solo album a while back? Yep, Ball and Chain was previously a Townshend solo track. And one track was written by Pete’s brother Simon. Still, 9 tracks written by PT last year and recorded this year is pretty good, I’m very excited for it. Worth noting also that in order to accomplish this, there

Reading comments like that about the new album makes me think I’m the only person on earth who liked Endless Wire. “Black Widows Eyes” and “It’s Not Enough” are really, really good Who songs.

Quote5stringTeleHe seems to be much more protective of his voice now than he was even 10 years ago. I saw a Who concert in 2007 (I think it was the last show of that tour) where Roger had a cold or the Flu. He croaked his way through the set, apologizing for his bad voice between each song. The crowd still loved it. The '07 shows are so conflicting to listen to - the band was shit hot, the

Up until a couple of years ago I lived a stones throw from Moby Arena in Fort Collins where the tour kicked off, I thought about that frequently every time I’d cycle past. Was cool having a piece of Stones history in my backyard.

Quotetatters QuoteCristiano Radtke The Who - Ball and Chain (new single) This sounds more like The Who than anything that's on Endless Wire, and that makes me wonder if maybe Simon Townshend didn't have a hand in the writing. Simon's best songs are as good as anything on any of Pete's solo records. In fact, since the 1980s, the only good Townshend songs have been Simon Tow

Even if the show is much the same as 14, it will be nice for Japan to get the acoustic set and the No Filter stage. The '14-'16 one was their least interesting presentation of the last decade or so.

QuoteMadcap Yeah I’m hoping they do a tour without the orchestra (which was great!) next year to promote the new album. PT said in July that they're taking the current show to Europe next year, so I'd be surprised if they did another show particular to this album... maybe another track or two will find its way into the list, that's all. Though a one-off gig where they played all
