QuoteDanHowever Roger has been running the tours for 10 years plus now. Both his Tommy 2011 and Quadrophenia 2013 tours were 100% percent Roger then he asked Pete if he wants to come aboard and make it The Who, in one case he declined and in the other he accepted. Given the damp squib that the 2017 TCT Tommy turned out to be, probably just as well Pete sat that Tommy tour out. ‘12-13 Quad is

Quoteswimtothemoon I believe you are mistaken about Daltrey running the Who. In my opinion, Pete is the leader. Pete was, for many years. But in 2009, Daltrey had a mostly successful arena tour in the US on his own, and from that decided he didn’t need to put up with anything from Pete anymore, if Pete didn’t agree to terms, he’d just do solo tours. So Roger sacked their long term keyboard pla

I saw a couple of versions of Hits 50, once in Denver and once at Isle of Wight, and while it was great fun, the Daltrey run Who (2010-present) is much less dynamic musically than when Pete had the reins. I caught the orchestra show in Seattle and it was really good, it added a new element which made the whole thing more interesting. Pete in particular seemed re-energized. And as mentioned abo

QuoteNikkei Real headscratcher how they never bothered to acknowledge the contents of the bonus disks on stage (could have played When You're Gone, Plundered My Soul, Claudine, Criss Cross etc) but when they're really scraping the bottom of the barrel they decide to try that one? I’d have loved to have heard Plundered My Soul as well, but I think it would have been too much of a chall

Of the three, I think the ones still kicking the most ass on the road are The Who. Daltrey still sings very well, and Townshend is both a capable player and still has fire in his belly. But the thing the Stones have had over both Macca and The Who is way more principles still involved. McCartney does his bit very well, but he also has 5 hired hands and no other septuagenarians. Daltrey and Tow

The current stage is one of my favorites, they really knocked it out of the park this time, after a few years which looked like they’d run out of ideas in stadiums (Licks, ABB, and ‘14-‘16 were all pretty “meh”).

QuoteGazza No. Keith has pretty much free rein on his own mini set. Half the audience are going to the restrooms or merchandise stands anyway and he knows that. Chuck is on record as saying a few years back that he pitches several ideas for deep cuts to Mick and they either get stroked off or if they do get played often get dumped early on in the tour if the audience reaction isnt wild enough.

That picture from Chuck on the “b stage” reminds me… those were some of the best moments from the 2019 tour. A bit manufactured with off stage musicians playing and singing. but it was glorious, including Charlie on his smaller kit, swinging away as only he could. In Seattle, we got Sweet Virginia and Dead Flowers, and it was 10 minutes of heaven.

Quoteribbelchips The Paris Olympia show from the Four Flicks boxset. Great setlist, small venue, fantastic band performance. Worth the whole thing for that version of Neighbors. 20 years after releasing and touring it, they worked out how to _play_ it.

QuoteTooTight the big surprise was Salt Lake City. Maybe my favorite Bigger Bang concert release? Good sound and good show, and really representative of what those arena shows felt like that fall and winter. Apart from the train wreck of Rain Fall Down, it’s a good gig and shows Keith in as good a shape as he could be in that era. And as others have commented, it’s nice that it doesn’t feel l

Having heard it, it’s interesting the way all the early reviews called out Lavatory Lil as a mistake - one even comparing it to the truly awful Bogey Music from McCartney II. Lavatory Lil is lightweight, it won’t be remembered in a month, but it’s perfectly listenable. If you played me that before the rest of the record and said “that’s the worst track on it”, I’d be expecting it to be a pretty g

One of the things I think we can conclude from all this is that Mick wants to make a Stones album. Mick could have made an album during lockdown if he was content to give up the Stones' name, and have Keith calling it awful in the press. I'm looking forward to McCartney III next Friday. I wasn't keen on his last one (Egypt Station) but that was the first one since...Off the Gro

QuoteStoneageYes, I think so Dandy. I have heard so too. What I was referring to was that Jagger most probably was the architect behind the 1989/90 tours new music arrangements. Not Chuck or Matt. Given they were mostly copied from the arrangements from his solo tour, that would make sense.

Quotehockenheim95 QuoteStoneage Okey, a stupid question: Was it really necessary with two separate synth/keyboard musicians on stage (Clifford, Leavell)? Wasn't one enough? The do this again since 2016! Otherwise we wouldn't be able to enjoy the fake harp on Miss You or the fake choir on YCAGWYW :-) I might be the only person who likes the fake harp on Miss You, but I think it was a

Seems very stupid, a lot of work for zero benefit. jb Correct, mic’d into the p.a. In terms of why do it at all - why have lights? Why have big inflatable dolls? Why have a bridge? They do what they

Quotejbwelda I doubt very much bands have "fake" amplifier cabinets on stage. jb Oh they definitely do. Green Day’s rig rundown here shows that the cabs on stage are fake and the real amps are way behind the drums, facing away from the front of house.

Listening to Keith's playing here is truly a revelation - he was playing extremely well in 1989. This show has two interesting things happening simultaneously: - the introduction of the "it doesn't matter if Keith turns up" arrangement. This was the first time a Rolling Stones show had sufficient backing for songs to keep going without Keith. From the second song - Chuck pl

QuoteHairball I don't think I've heard a boot of the '75 version of Rocks Off, but I imagine Ronnie must have butchered it beyond recognition. You can hear it here: . Ronnie’s more or less fine, but Mick doesn’t know any of the words, Charlie doesn’t do any of those cool syncopated fills which make the song swing, and this song really needs horns. I can see why it was dropped af

QuoteTravelinMan QuoteChris Fountain Concerning Brussels - Was Rocks Off played at that concert? Seems like that song would be included or was it not up to par? No, I think they only played it a few times on that tour. Rocks Off wasn’t played in Europe ‘73 - it was played in Australia that year, then once in ‘75, then not until ‘94.
