Ernie Watts is a fine player and did some good work in '81. He also did some work that i found incongruous and annoying (just an opinion, not a fact). Had he played about 30% less per show, I'd be approximately 50% more appreciative...

Hmmm. Sorry to be non-responsive, but '78 is the clear winner here.

Look -- you never keep MT out of anything -- anyway, my comment was not about Taylor, it was about your posts. But, it was a bit harsh, and I apologize. And by the way, I think Taylor's pretty awesome, too. It's just that I like the pre-MT and the post-MT more than you do. No big deal...enjoy your day.

QuoteAmsterdamned WTF became of the RS musically? Must I laugh or cry.. Entertaining and making music should be integrated. This is a bogus charter flight, or can't they really do any better? Sloppy playing, amateurish guitars, cliché posing till the bone. If there are some tickets available I'll send my 4 years old niece to the cinema: Nursery school fodder. Translation for those

Quotemickschix I'm sure that they used to take swipes at each other in public, just like an old married couple but the time finally came when Mick reached his limit. The silence and lack of response to Keith's comments in LIFE spoke volumes! And that's not to say that the $$ won't get the best of Mick and he decides he can stand Keith one more time for one more tour. It would

Just a couple more things... The sound was good in my theater, Tod, just not loud enough and somehwat different from HG, as I said above. As to Love in Vain and "Taylor owning this song," I do not dissent. I think, though, that this version, in which the band jointly owned the song, was quite powerful. Finally, while I agree with the majority opinion that the band was great, es

Loved the show -- theater was about 2/3 full, which is more than I expected. The sound (Tod) was NOT loud enough, but was bearable. I'm writing basically to make this one point: people have said in this thread that Keith seemed low in the mix; for my ears in this theater, compared to Handsome Girls, Ronnie was noticeably lower and Mick's vocals were a bit higher -- Keith, Bill, C

Quotethewrittenwordisexpensive Wait a second...IORRs ripping on a professional musician who has been an integral part of the Stones live sound since 1989? Wow. That is just sad, pathetic, delusional, hypocritical, etc... Chuck's life seems pretty damn good. Sorry yours is so full of frustration and hatred. I wouldn't take it too hard. First, for a Stone's fan to suggest Chuck

QuoteWilliamPatrickMaynard While I understand the argument against overdubbing live albums as being disingenous, they certainly did us all a favor by removing Billy Preston's ray-gun effects from "Brown Sugar" while putting together LOVE YOU LIVE. Ok, you got me there. Can we make a distinction between edits and overdubs? Either way, it's still not an accurate representati

There's a lot wrong with overdubbing a live show, I think, because it's presented as something real -- an authentic documentation of the performance. It is true, of course, that it has been going on a long time with the Stones -- Austin is nothing new, other than possibly the number of overdubs, which still seems to be the subject of some disagreement. A couple of days after that

Quotemickschix Mick does look great and it WAS his night to shine. There will always be detractors and those who love to try to diminish his relevance but guess what?? THEY CAN'T! He is a survivor, a gifted musician and he seems HAPPY with his life so all the more power to him! Right...his relevance has diminished, but not because of his detractors...

Naturalust, I sure agree that Hendrix was great at playing blues -- see "Red House," for an obvious, well-known example. This doesn't necessarily mean he was a "blues player,"depending on how you define that term. Also, I don't think "Little Wing" is a blues, as I understand the term...

QuoteMathijs Quoteflilflam The live performance in Austin, Texas is a 10 for sure. The guitar work by Keith and Ronnie on Under My Thumb is incredible. Listen to YMT with headphones -it's not Richards or Wood playing guitar, it's all overdubbed, most likely by the Stones techs. Mathijs I have never thought that, Mathijs. I hear some overdubs for sure on this show, but mainly Ja

I think we're in the minority, but I agree strongly with Scottkeef on this one. In fact, I think all of the Some Girls songs that were played in both '78 and '81 were better in '78. I pretty much agree with Erik about the inconsistency in '78, though -- so, I guess I'm saying the stronger '78 versions of those songs are better than the '81 versions.

By the way, I dont know much about the how things are "matrix'd" but has anyone ever tried to do that with these 2 fine recordings? I have, but I was unable to get it done. Quotemrgrowl791 Yes, It was released on Still Alive and Well.....Also Silver Train is on this recording. If not mistakened, The Stones gave Silver Train to Johnny and he recorded it before Goats Head Soup. BTW...His greatest album. Certainly a good one. I like the Johnny Winter And Live mentioned above, as well as the first Columbia album.

Well, Mice -- Learning guitar parts note for note is not something I really do, especially on a blues, since I tend to think of blues being very expressive and improvisational. Having said that, it sounds to me like Keith is in standard tuning and is just (like much improvisation) kind of improvising based on the melody of the song. If you listen to other shows in '75-'76, you'l
