Quoteproudmary QuoteNaturalust It's all rather depressing isn't it? I think that for the Stones to mature that they must GET OVER the need to present a stage "show" that does anything but emphasize THE MUSIC. A 60+ year old dancing fool never did it for me. Sit down, talk about the songs, belt it out but leave the over done stage moves to the teenagers who are in new bands and

I've been playing guitar longer than many of you have been alive, but it doesn't make my opinion any more valuable. Just because someone owns a few guitars doesn't mean they understand music more than the next person. I do understand, however, that music is not just the notes that are played; musical notation is not music. The noise that's made -- the sound you hear -- is

This has been beaten to death. Listen to Ry Cooder's work over his career and then listen to Keith's. Ry influenced Keith for a very short period with his one trick that he could do. The influence was substantial and evident on Let it Bleed, but even then -- there's no way Cooder could've produced Rambler or Let it Bleed. Oh, and by the way, what about the fact that most o

Tele -- sorry for the confusion. People may think it's all about the solos for you, but I don't think that. You have actually been very clear in your comments and I think I do understand. I was just responding to this specific point you made earlier in this thread: 2. Wood soloed about as much as Taylor initially. In fact, he was trying to ape Taylor's parts on a number of tune

Tele -- I think your posts on this subject make a lot of sense, but just to clarify -- I think most of those that criticize Taylor for playing too much lead are not talking so much about the solos, but his playing lead over the vocals. My personal opinion is in between -- some of that "noodling" works for me and some doesn't. I often think Ronnie's playing fits a song better

Quotewith sssoul Quotetumblingdice I know we tend to compare ... Sometimes we lose focus of ... i don't! and yes this 1978 LIV is a shining piece of forever, thanks to that whole handful of skinny English cats being who they are but i also think Ronnie's part in it is real crucial - and that's without comparing this rendition to others. i haven't had enough coffee yet

Quotejamesfdouglas I've ignored bootlegs from the 75 tour my whole life. I don't know why, maybe the LA Forum video - I found it a bit ridiculous. I've got some vids from '76 - that's it. Love You Live was... mostly OK. Where would one start to find something as goos as Live in Texas??? You wouldn't, until they give us something, if they have it. The LA Forum

QuoteNoCode0680 I would love it, and I haven't even heard the bootlegs. Most every band/artist that has appeared on the BBC has an album (more often than not double album) of their performances, I don't see why the Stones shouldn't. Many people consider the BBC boots to be essential.

Good thread, Erik -- I like the mix a lot. I think the sound has more depth than the bootlegs and it's generally well-balanced. On the other hand, this release sounds more "managed" (because it is) -- so, sonically, it lacks the untamed engergy of the bootlegs, which may be a bit of what Doxa was talking about in Rambler. I do not think Taylor needs to be louder, at least on

Ok, since Tod the Despot won't let me (or anyone) have live Stones, I'm going with Erik with ALL my LPs, including my Billie Holiday and Miles Davis. Since those aren't allowed on the island either, apparently, we'll invite Tod to to fashion a boat and join us annually, if he brings scotch and cigars.

Don't know about what the definitions on "swing" is around here, but Darryl states in an interview from '94 or '95 that Charlies snare-beat is one of the things that makes his groove very special. He hits it a millisecond or so behi

QuoteBärs The man knows how to swing right? Yes, all of them do, which leads to this point -- In a combo format, I'm not sure any one person can swing (however we define that) alone. If swing can be created simply by creating space, as Mathijs suggested, , then others in the band could either: 1) contribute to and increase the swing by their own choices and/or feel; or 2) destroy th

QuoteDiscoVolante Best Jagger/Richards songs that Mick Taylor wrote: Sway, Moonlight Mile Taylor didn't write those songs. He was, of course, hugely important in making them what they are (that's what band members should do), but he didn't write them. It's arguable that his contributions should have resulted in partial credit for the music, but probably not in light of the

I don't know the answer, and I'm not sure about the difference between writer's block and lack of inspiration, but...here's my 2 cents. Songwriting is both art and craft. It's not unusual for an artist of any type to have a very fruitful period as a young person and then lose their inspiration. Of course, some people stay inspired longer than others, and some may h
