The most amazing (and just plain lucky) part about where we positioned ourselves is that we stood right in front of an actual gate, not just metal rail. so as soon as the show ended they opened up the gate, we were the first people out of the pit.

I'd avoid the front and make sure you're against some sort of rail. As mentioned, the rail (gate) against the catwalk is great, we were posted up in front of the back gate and it was perfect.
