I think it may have been a bit of a mess up. I have listened to the Gimme Shelter intro - it sounds fine to me. I agree with the wider points around Keith's playing - one theory I have is that spending time with Steve before the tour to teach him the songs meant Keith had to sit down in a studio and actually play the songs again and again - before they even reached rehearsals. I don't know if this counts as last minute but Chuck said in his latest interview that they made some changes after the full set run through before opening night at St Louis. This suggests they had made a set - played it all through a day or two before - and then changed it sometime before the gig - hardly "last minute" but in theory could have been the day of the show...
