Hadn't really listened to anything by Gary Clark Jr until I saw him at Hyde Park last year. Bought his album and was slightly disappointed by the 'over-produced' sound as you say; he definitely sounds much better as a live act. Try a few of his EP's, they're a bit closer to the sound you're hearing now.
