What would the set list look like... ...if the Rolling Stones got to choose it?

Saw them December 19, 1981 at the Uptown Theater with a long-time fan. The late-career success of Freeze Frame and the "Centerfold" single clearly energized them, as my buddy said it was the best show he'd seen since their mid-seventies heyday. As a relatively recent convert, I of course loved the show and had to admit they were a formidable live band. It's a shame it t

An unintentional byproduct of this thread is that it highlights the unusually high quality of the Stones' support acts. To their credit, they have never shied away from hiring top-flight bands who could potentially steal the show. And I like that. I think a lot of headliners get very comfortable, and need the challenge a hungry up-and-comer provides. IN my admittedly limited exper

Chicago Stadium, July 22, 1975 One summer morning I raced a horde of fans to a department store Ticketmaster counter and snagged two tickets to what was almost immediately a sold-out show. The ten-dollar price tag looks like spare change now, but in 1975 it represented five hours' work washing cars at a Pontiac dealership. While the sound was initially mediocre, the sight of the ac

I'm going with Marty Stuart and Vince Gill. And don't forget Rodney Crowell. Not only did he play in Emmylou's Hot Band but he can write some pretty good songs, too.

Any Hall of Fame has its biases and prejudgices, just like the body of people it appeals to. And I think the Rock & Roll Hall of fame has a bias against what was once called progressive rock and certain bands--Deep Purple and the Electric Light Orchestra being two of them. Whereas critical evaluation of a band like Led Zeppelin has reversed itself, critics didn't like ELO and Deep

QuoteRollingFreak Quotetatters QuoteRollingFreak I'm happy Sting didn't get in. I thought he was a lock just due to popularity, and he deserves to be in for the Police, but solo isn't my taste. Shocked that Green Day isn't going in. They seemed like the GNR or Nirvana of this year of the obvious act that going in because they're "semi-current". We don'

QuoteRollingFreak Listen, I'm not a Joan Jett fan, but the bottom line is she is a pretty big influence...and Kraftwerk, which are just stupid IMO. So....Joan Jett is an influence but Kraftwerk is "just stupid"? Hmmmm. I'll have to think about that one.

QuoteBowieStone Completely disagree. Just my imagination from Hampton is not only a highlight of the show, but a highlight in their career. Agree that's one of the very best renderings of that song out there, but a (gulp) career highlight? Ugh-ugh. Not even close.

I adore the Temptations. And I adore the Rolling Stones. But somehow I never cottoned to the Stones abundant covers of the Temptations. The worst was "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)". It was far and away the weakest track on Some Girls and to these ears, stuck out like a sore thumb. Mick Jagger is a soul man at heart, and clearly loves the stuff. But as a Temptations

Quotetatters I, too, have never understood the fascination some people have with Joan Jett. I think she's one of the worst singers I've ever heard, with a truly unpleasant-sounding voice. I'll say this: her bellowing on "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" kind of fit anthemic ambitions of the song, but beyond that, her voice was pretty insufferable. More than anything

QuoteMore Hot Rocks Nothing against The Spinners but what about other top 40 bands like Three Dog Night and The Guess Who? I didn't know that having R&B singles which transcended their genre and appealed to white audiences as well was a crime! Furthermore, what do you make of the, um, Rolling Stones and their top 40 singles? Thank you for your edification.

I guess I'm not alone in my newfound lack of interest in U2. Is it true with you also that at the heart of it is simply a lack of songs? The artistic fall-off since "All That You Can't Leave Behind" is staggering. Rolling Stone magazine's naming "Songs of Innocence" as one of the best albums of 2014 is laughable and entirely political. Calculated solely t

Quotetriceratops Las Vegas makes sense because promoters would clamor over The Stones in the right setting. The right casino owner who has a concert venue would self insure or take care of any insurance problem the Stones might have in the future. Promoted properly The Stones could have a three performance residency there. The casino tie-ins have limitless possibilities. Tumbling Dice being

I'm Partial to Plug In Flush Out (VGP 259), which collects performances from Ft. Worth, Houston and Philadelphia. It also doubles as a fire starter for BBQs. But you're denying yourself by keeping to soundboards. There are several noteworthy performances from the '72 tour which defy their modest sources and provide enormously satisfying listens.
