As noted from Ian Stuart's recollections of the Flamingo Jazz Club, the place had a lot of smartly dressed people in "zoot suits", as the Flamingo eventually became a central London stronghold for British "Mod" culture and fashion. A Mod who frequented "the Mingo" remembers: LONDON: THE FLAMINGO CLUB (source Mick Hall) Rhythm, Blues and Anti Racism, Live at

It's reasonable to assume they would want to make the most of this opportunity--that is, free promotion. With a nomination, they've got a reason to attend, and they are certainly familiar and comfortable with the venue. The equivalent of the U.S. Grammys, the BRIT awards would be an excellent chance to promote their live act to a mainstreeam audience, if for nothing else just to say &#

The Stones first played at the Flamingo Jazz Club on 7 January 1963. Ian Stuart recalls auditioning for what would become their regular Monday night gig in January 1963: (H)aving seen the Stones once at the Marquee, the people who were running the scene in those days were 100% against us, and it was one bloody fight to get anywhere... I'll never forget the first time we went down to the F

With years of "austerity measures" in effect, it is doubtful that the UK is better off than the U.S. at this point. A global economy means that just about everyone suffers at once. The British pound, for instance, has always been priced high against the dollar, often by as much as 2 to 1 , so it's not surprising that a common Euro currency would be priced higher than the dollar as

Monday night gigs for The Rolling Stones in January 1963 were played in Soho's Flamingo Jazz Club, which opened in 1952 in the basement of Mapleton Restaurant on Coventry Street but from 1957 to 1967 was located at 33-37 Wardour Street. The Who are not known for their comedy potential, but in the early days they seemed to have the chops. I read somewhere that The Who were slated to star in a Monkees-type TV series, but this never happened. Word has it that the video for their Happy Jack single, where they play would-be safe robbers who get distracted by the discovery of a cake lying around on someone's desk, was a clip that

Thanks for posting, JFD. I've noticed this video on YouTube but never bothered posting it, because I figured it had been posted before. The Stripped idea was the right thing for them to do at the right time--they didn't give fans the back-to-basics blues/covers album everyone has been wanting for years, but they did the next best thing. One thing, though--your thread title is missing

The Rolling Stones played an estimated 39 gigs at the Ricky Tick club in Windsor on Fridays between 1962 and 1964. In April 1964, the club moved to a mansion on the Thames known as Clewer Mead, also in Windsor, where it remained until 1968. In January 1963, the regular Friday night gig for The Rollin' Stones was played at the Ricky Tick club, an upstairs room in the Star and Garter Hotel on 133 Peascod Street in Windsor, Berkshire. They played their first gig there on 14 December 1962 , which also happens to be the date on which Bill Wyman played his first gig with The Rollin' Stones. From his book Rolling with the Stones,

Charlie seems to be having fun. There are more nuances to enjoy in his drumming when in jazz arrangements, as there are not the rote constraints of The Stones' more straight rock approach. I wouldn't mind a full album of jazzified Stones standards. I'd buy it, but I don't think it would happen.
