Jeez, you try and have a thoughtful discussion to put things in perspective by pointing out sales figures and sales threshold certifications... ...and you get called negative and angry... ...and you're accused of having an agenda... ...because everyone's pulling this "great for an old man" bit because 120,000 fans went out and bought a new album in the same week. In an era where music (by young or old artists) simply does not sell his opening weeks numbers are impressive. Don’t be shocked if like Blue + Lonesome, Egypt Station has some staying power...Either way, hats off to an almost 8

The real sign that McCartney's new album is truly making any impact of lasting significance is the singles charts. So far, the double A-side of "I Don't Know"/"Come On to Me" has charted, but only in France, bubbling way under respectively at #164 and #147. "Fuh You" has not charted anywhere. McCartney will shelve this new release after a while just l

Not really "wow" when you put things in perspective. The #1 US, #3 UK, etc., represents (mostly) physical sales -- that means aging Baby Boomer fans who still buy physical product, along with middle-aged 50ish consumers, are all buying it the same week. Chart figures will plummet from the second week on... His previous album "New" also made #3 UK as well as #3 US -- but

Quotegotdablouse Looking at this pic it's hard to believe Mick is only 8 years younger than the Killer ! Well, hate to say it, but Jerry Lee's got better skin! Recall a TV interview from the 1980s, 20/20 or something like that, Jerry Lee's reclining on a sofa saying he'll be out there when he's 90, and the interviewer Geraldo or some such other TV interviewer (th

Were they never big in Europe? You were lucky! All I heard in 9th grade (1981) was Shake It Up! That band and Journey were what sent me clamoring for Stones, Beatles, Doors, Cream, -- anything -- just get me out of that parking lot, away from these... Cars!

@RollingFreak, Sure, I see what you mean. One day, when I was 23, I get on a subway train for college classes, and I'm thinking, 'At 23 Paul McCartney was writing Yesterday, and here I am writing dumb little music/film reviews for the college newspaper.' Honey Pie and Martha My Dear, Paul wrote stuff like that because musically he had old-fashioned sensibilities -- his father

QuoteRollingFreak Just listened to the White Album tonight. @#$%&, its amazing that he wasn't even 27 when that album came out. He's my age and by The White Album he seems like he should be like 40! Thats nuts that at 26 he's writing that many incredible god damn songs. Seriously, what a talent they were. The fact that any of them are still going today is nuts. Would have been

Quote35love Paul broke bad! - This is nothing new. I recall reading about the group thing in one of those latter day Beatles biographies, sometime in the 2000s -- it may even have been in the Howard Sounes bio on McCartney, but I can't quite recall at this distance... Some pretty crazy stuff in there -- it seems his former wife Heather had to save him from drowning at home in h

QuoteRocky Dijon It's still published by ABKCO since her version of the song came out in 1969. STICKY FINGERS is that weird grey area where the songs are published by ABKCO but were released after the Decca and London deals expired. ABKCO has the rights to anthologize the singles from it, though they can't reissue the album itself. I'd love to know more about how it all worked and

QuotejloweSure her records haven't been mega sellers, but I can't imagine money has ever been her main concern. Am not aware she took a penny off Mick after their relationship ended. She has a co-writing credit on Sister Morphine, which is post-ABKCO material.

They're waiting for McCartney to stop touring. No way they're going to be outpaced by a Beatle! I bet Mick is a secret vegan... ...just to give him more energy for the long haul.

Quotemarianna QuoteBowieStone Quotemarianna I first saw Paul in 1988 at the UC Berkeley football stadium. Paul didn’t tour in 1988. 1990? Possibly. It's been a long time. In any case, he isn't a good act to see in a large outdoor venue. He has the pyrotechnics on "Live and Let Die" and that's about it. Songs like "Blackbird" don't carry well. That s

Didn't hear this "surprise" show". Regarding Macca's singing voice... and even his speaking voice... well... ...just going on that Marc Maron interview posted above, which was great by the way... ...the reason Mick's voice is still great is because he always could sing. In later years, Mick has even taken singing lessons -- or should we say voice coaching

Not even going to bother with the new album. It will never grow on me. The previous album "New" I only listened to twice. There were some nice, catchy tunes on it. Just as, I'm sure, is the case with Eqypt Station. But we don't talk about Paul McCartney for what he writes NOW. We're interested because of what he wrote THEN. The Beatles are archetypal.

Regarding Macca's willingness to "go natural" with hair color... ...it seems he's got a very skilled stylist... ...sort of, to ease fans into the transition... ...because he's got a lot more color at 76 than he should have. Look at a snap from his 1986 promo vid for the Press single... ...Already strikingly silvery on top and sides -- and that was 32 ye

Charlie's sister, who? Does Charlie have a sister? First I've heard of this. I thought he was an only drummer. What instrument does she play? I know the name Charlie Watts, because he's the Stones drummer. That's all I want to know. I realize "the boys" have family, but what does that have to do with the music? I know that Mick has a daughter named

A bit of a gyp. The thread title indicates there will be such an album next year. But there won't. The best memorial albums are the ones he played on. The songs that get ignored in concerts. QuotebillwebsterGiven most of the posters' preference for older material, I wonder when you actually got into the music of this band. 1981. I was 15. Ever since then, it was like... wondering when, if ever, they would put out another Tattoo You. Only

QuoteHairballWhile I appreciate Blue and Lonseome for what it is (an album of blues covers), and think it's their best overall cohesive sounding album since Tattoo You (in large part due to the production), they really didn't stretch out the tunes much beyond what they already were from previous versions by other artists. The fact they recorded it in two or three days shows they didn&#

Quotebuttons67 the standard of rolling stones songs has declined through the years, but they also had a lot of filler in the early days. they also had a lot of cover versions in the early days too. "the standard of rolling stones songs has declined through the years" That's the trade-off of being out of their element -- that is, just following current trends rather than set
