Internet service is not in my budget. (I'm posting this from my phone.) I watch over-the-air analog TV with a converter box, and enjoy music on CD and vinyl through a Rotel amp and Infinity speakers, circa 1986. The alphabet soup of streaming/viewing services frankly makes my head spin. I don't see this changing anytime soon.

QuoteAquamarine Wasn't it the 1972 tour? I seem to remember them all being there and Bobby Keys and Keith setting a bathroom on fire or something. (The only part of the story I enjoyed.) When they played Chicago in '72 they were guests at the mansion. And yes, Keith and Bobby tested the sprinkler system in Hef's bathroom.

Just finished the Tiny Tim bio "Eternal Troubador." Eccentric to the extreme and not my cup of tea, but many people throughout the book (including Johnny Carson and Howard Stern) called him the most genuine person they'd ever met. His persona wasn't a put-on. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of early 20th century popular music. All he ever wanted was to perform and make people

I've never seen this on any report, book, or review of the '72 tour. If it were true, this would be Big News for Stones fans. This would be the only appearance of CYHMK on the tour. Would Mick really mess with the set list so late in the tour? I can't see it. FM Set list puts it at the end of the show, after the barrage of BBJ, RTJ, JJF, and SFM? Nah. I call BS.

Chuck Berry. Early 80s. Spent most of the show stopping songs to berate the band for not playing to his satisfaction. Think of the rehearsal scene in Hail Hail Rock n Roll, except in front of a paying audience. I don't think he played a complete song all night. His big finish was one verse and one chorus of Johnny B Goode, after which he unplugged and walked offstage leaving the band to fini

QuotegeorgeV QuoteKoen QuotegeorgeV Someone just posted a video on Facebook from 1972 where he throws a bucket of water into the crowd during JJF and then goes to another container and grabs handfuls of rose petals and throws them on the crowd as well. It was filmed in Canada. According to Greenfield's S.T.P. it was unusually hot in Toronto for the '72 show. Someone claimed the temper

Saw DE in Milwaukee about 1980 (at The Palms, for anyone who cares about that sort of thing.) He ran onstage with that big old Gibson in one hand, a bottle of beer in the other, strapped in, stomped into "Crawlin' from the Wreckage" and never let up. One of my all-time favorite shows!

QuoteCome On C-cksucker Blues...Why a song like that? Pretty weird to me... They owed Decca one more single on their contract (before dropping Decca to form their own label.) They did it as a joke--you can hear Mick laughing at one point. CS Blues was a great big middle finger to Allen Klein and the record company. Thoroughly unreleasable, but they fulfilled the contract!

QuoteJohnnyBGoode Came across The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions that Charlie Watts plays on in the local record store today and bought it. Haven't listened yet, but those who have, what are your thoughts? One of my favorite discs! Check out "Do the Do" and "Wang Dang Doodle"

Stu was bedrock: a solid, unwavering foundation that they could always count on. As the band got bigger, amidst all the craziness, the hangers-on, and the sycophants, they needed him more than ever. That he stayed on after being cut from the band speaks volumes about what kind of guy he was. He would be very proud of his "three-chord wonders."

A decent little piece. Mick and Keith interviewed separately, no Charlie or Ronnie. They talk about the early days, and Brian gets credit for picking the band's name--but one still gets the erroneous impression that Mick and Keith founded the band. Best Keith moment: discussing Dylan's Nobel prize, Keith says "I want mine in chemistry!"

Quotereg thorpe Quotetatters QuoteDeltics All kinds of things wrong with this one. Sold for $40! I've seen two or three different designs of this one on eBay. For starters, the word "The" is in a type font that still hadn't been invented in 1965. Bobby Goldsboro?

QuotePalace Revolution 2000 That is BY FAR my favorite part of the song. It's as if the camera quickly pans downstairs to the engine room for a second, and we see Bill and Charlie down there with soot covered faces shoveling the coals; and they kind of look up and give an A-OK sign, Haha.. That's it! Bill and Chawlie stoking the fire. Perfect.

QuotePalace Revolution 2000 I just don't understand why he doesn't brag on the solo. He knows it is an iconic sound and solo. Why does he not take more credit for it? To *us* it's iconic, but to Keith maybe it's just something he tossed off in the studio and barely remembers. Think of how many leads he's done. Maybe no one has ever asked him specifically to comment on t

QuoteGravityBoy I don't think the percussion/drums on this track should be underestimated. There is a great low underbeat (jungle beat?) going on, something they never captured live (except at Altamont?). What was Charlie doing to play that? Was he assisted by someone/thing? Charlie is playing snare and floor tom during the verse and the sax break. Goes to the cymbals with his right

QuoteTheBlockbuster The only reasonable explanation I can come up with to why they would avoid the deep cuts is the fear of Keith not remembering the chords, and it's not as easy to remember songs for Mick and Charlie either these days I presume. The ambitious attempt at playing 10 rare songs could end up in a messy trainwreck disaster. Word. It would be too difficult and would require mor

Great article. A little surprised that, in his discussion of Beggars, the author didn't mention Prodigal Son, certainly one of the "blackest" sounding records in the band's catalog.

QuoteSilver Dagger And it links so well between Keith's Ventilator Blues and the old vinyl side closer Let It Loose. The song shimmers like a hot summer day in New Orleans - and with those gospel background singers it has that great city stamped all over it. It's a really important part of the epic musical jigsaw and homage to Americana that Exile became. I was 15 in the summer of &

Might be my favorite Stones boot: Beet beet Beet at the Beeb: BBC recordings 63-65. Fully three quarters are covers from the early years: Jimmy Reed; Bo Diddley...great stuff! There's a cut listed on the CD insert, but not included on the disc called "Dust my pyramids" by Richard/Jones. I'm guessing this is a throw-away jam, but wonderi g if anyone knows anything about it.

During a show? During sound-che Peace, Mr DJA As a drummer myself, I'm guessing this is more of a mojo than anything else--like baseball players who always wear a certain pair of soc

We had a counter-top radio in our kitchen and it was always on and tuned to the local Top-40 AM stations. This would be early 60s. "Leader of the Pack" by the Shangri–Las "Chapel of Love" by the Dixie Cups (I have a very vivid memory of riding in my cousin's yellow VW Bug on a summer day and hearing this song.)

This my favorite Stones period and I've enjoyed all of the books in Greenfield's early 70s "trilogy." My complaint about Ain't it Time... is not enough detail on the shows themselves. Oh, and I'm really tired of reading about fan-boy, hanger-on Parsons.

Sadly, I don't think this will ever happen. To replace warhorses with deep cuts would require more time and effort from the band than they're willing to give. I think that, for the most part, they're running on autopilot--and perhaps that's deserved after 50+ years. It's all about giving the people what they want (and most Stones concertgoers likely only care about the wa

I'm a drummer myself and Mickey Waller has always been a favorite of mine. Someone (maybe Rod Stewart, not sure) once described his style as the sound of a drum kit falling down a flight of stairs. Perfect description! But...I'm highly suspicious of this claim. The drumming doesn't sound anything like Waller's wonderfully messy style. And Chawlie late for a session? Rubbish!
